VCU at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — A pivotal Atlantic 10 clash is set for Saturday at Belk Arena as the Davidson Wildcats host the VCU Rams, with both teams looking to solidify their standing in the conference race.

The Rams (13-6) enter having won three of their last four, including a 79-72 victory over Saint Joseph’s on Monday. VCU’s recent success has been fueled by forward Michael Belle, who is coming off a career-high 20-point performance against the Hawks. Over his last six games, Belle is averaging 9.3 points and has been a consistent defensive presence.

Davidson (12-6) has also found a rhythm, winning four of its last five contests. The Wildcats edged Fordham 68-63 on Wednesday behind a season-best 19 points from guard Josh Scovens. Scovens has provided a scoring lift, averaging 12.3 points over the last three games.

This matchup features two of the league’s more efficient offenses. VCU has scored 84 or more points in three of its last five outings. Davidson has surpassed 79 points in three of its last five, though it was held to a season-low 45 in a loss to Rhode Island on Jan. 10.

Defensive pressure will be a key factor. VCU’s length, led by Belle, will test a Davidson backcourt that has committed just 18 total turnovers in its last two wins. The Wildcats’ ability to handle that pressure and execute their motion offense could decide the outcome.

The game tips off at 7 p.m. EST on Saturday, Jan. 24, in Davidson, North Carolina. VCU’s next game is at home against Richmond on Jan. 27. Davidson travels to face George Mason on Jan. 28.
