Nevada at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — A pivotal Mountain West clash is set for Saturday at The Pit as the New Mexico Lobos host the Nevada Wolf Pack in a matchup of teams jockeying for position in the conference race.

Both teams enter with strong records, as New Mexico (15-4) holds a slim edge over Nevada (14-5) in the standings. The Lobos are 10-1 at home this season, where their raucous crowd provides one of the nation’s toughest environments. Nevada, however, has proven resilient on the road, including a key victory at Air Force last weekend.

The game features a compelling duel at point guard. Nevada’s Tayshawn Comer is coming off a 12-point, 7-assist performance in Tuesday’s 87-54 rout of San Jose State and has scored in double figures in five of his last seven games. His playmaking will be critical against New Mexico’s defensive pressure.

The Lobos counter with dynamic guard Uriah Tenette, who led his team with 15 points and 4 assists in Wednesday’s 83-74 win over Fresno State. Tenette has been a consistent scoring threat, averaging 12.1 points over his last seven contests.

Nevada’s recent form shows a mix of dominant wins and narrow losses, including a 71-62 defeat at Utah State on Jan. 14. The Wolf Pack’s offense, which put up 92 points against Wyoming, will be tested by a New Mexico defense that has held opponents to an average of 64.2 points at home.

New Mexico seeks to avoid a repeat of its last home outing, a high-scoring 83-79 loss to San Diego State on Jan. 17. The Lobos have since rebounded with two straight wins.

This contest is the first of a regular-season series, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 24 in Reno. Saturday’s winner will gain an early advantage in what promises to be a tight Mountain West conference race. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. MST.
