Drake Outlasts Murray State in High-Scoring Missouri Valley Affair
DES MOINES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a high-octane Missouri Valley Conference clash defined by offensive efficiency and a decisive second-half surge, the Drake Bulldogs outlasted the Murray State Racers 101-90 on Wednesday night at a raucous Knapp Center.
The game, a rematch of a Racers victory just over a month prior, lived up to its billing as a shootout but ultimately turned on Drake’s ability to capitalize at the free-throw line and generate easy baskets in transition. The Bulldogs attempted 41 free throws, making 32, while the Racers went 21 for 30. Drake also owned a significant 19-8 advantage in fastbreak points, a key factor in pulling away after halftime.
The first half was a tightly contested affair featuring 10 lead changes and six ties. Both teams shot over 50% from the field in the opening period, with Drake taking a narrow 44-41 lead into the break behind 14 points from Jalen Quinn. Murray State kept pace through interior work, scoring 24 of their 41 first-half points in the paint.
The contest’s complexion shifted dramatically in the second half. Drake’s offense, already efficient, ascended to another level. The Bulldogs scored 57 points on 64% shooting from the field after intermission, consistently breaking down the Racers’ defense. The most important sequence of the game came during a 15-4 Drake run that spanned just over three minutes midway through the second half.
With Murray State having closed to within 64-62 following a Brayden Shorter layup, Drake responded with a devastating flurry. Jalen Quinn hit a jumper, and after a Racers turnover, Andrew Alia drained a three-pointer off a Quinn assist. Following another Murray State miss, Quinn connected again from mid-range. The exclamation point came when Okku Federiko tipped in a Quinn miss, capping the run and pushing Drake’s lead to 74-62 with 13:41 remaining. The Racers would never get the deficit back to single digits, as the Bulldogs’ lead ballooned to as many as 19 points.
Drake’s offensive execution was nearly flawless. The Bulldogs scored 101 points on just 81 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 124.0. They were remarkably balanced, shooting 50% from the field (32 of 64) and 41.7% from three-point range (5 of 12), while their parade to the foul line provided a constant, compounding advantage.
Murray State, which entered the game with a 16-3 record, fought hard but could not match Drake’s second-half firepower. The Racers scored 90 points on 82 possessions (109.4 offensive rating) but were hampered by 7-of-32 shooting from beyond the arc. They won the battle in the paint, 40-36, and committed only two more turnovers than Drake, but their defense had no answer for the Bulldogs’ sustained attack.
Jalen Quinn led all scorers with a dominant 34-point performance for Drake, adding two assists. Owen Larson provided crucial support with 22 points. The Bulldogs’ frontcourt also made significant contributions, with Isaiah Carr blocking three shots and altering several others in just 10 minutes of action, and Andrew Alia chipping in 12 points and steady guard play.
Murray State was led by a 20-point effort from Javon Jackson and 19 points from French forward Roman Domon, who also blocked two shots. Brock Vice provided a spark off the bench with 12 points in only eight minutes, and JJ Traynor added 12 points.
The victory was a significant one for Drake, which evened its season record at 10-10 overall and 4-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference. It served as a measure of revenge for their December loss in Murray and showcased their potent offensive capabilities when executing at a high level.
For Murray State, now 16-4 and 7-2 in conference play, the loss snapped a five-game winning streak and served as a reminder of the defensive challenges posed by the league’s top offenses. The Racers’ high-powered attack, which entered averaging over 84 points per game, was not the issue, but their inability to get consistent stops in the second half proved their undoing.
The announced attendance was 3,148 at the Knapp Center. Drake next travels to face Indiana State on Saturday, while Murray State continues its road trip at Northern Iowa.
