Indiana State at Murray State
Preview: Indiana State at Murray State
MURRAY, Ky. (Interstat) — A surging Murray State squad will look to extend its dominance and protect its home court when it hosts an Indiana State team seeking consistency in a Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball clash Saturday at CFSB Center.
The Racers (15-3, 6-0 MVC) enter on a nine-game winning streak, having established themselves as the early front-runner in the conference race. Their potent offense, averaging 85.2 points during the streak, will test an Indiana State defense that has been vulnerable.
Murray State is led by guard Javon Jackson, who has been on a scoring tear. Over his last six games, Jackson is averaging 19.2 points and 3.2 assists, including a 21-point, 5-assist performance in a 92-79 win over Valparaiso last Saturday. His backcourt play, alongside contributions from Fredrick King and Roman Domon, has made the Racers one of the league’s most efficient teams.
The visiting Sycamores (9-9, 2-4) are coming off a high-scoring 94-89 home victory over Illinois State but have lost four of their last six. Consistency has been an issue, with their record reflecting a series of narrow defeats, including three losses by five points or fewer in conference play.
Indiana State will rely on guard Sterling Young, who is coming off a 14-point, 5-assist effort against Illinois State. Young has scored in double figures in four of his last five games, providing a key offensive spark for a team that will need efficiency to keep pace with the Racers.
The matchup pits one of the Valley’s hottest teams against a program trying to build momentum. Murray State’s perfect conference record and high-powered attack make them a formidable favorite, especially at home where they are 8-1 this season. Indiana State’s path to an upset likely requires containing Jackson, winning the turnover battle, and finding secondary scoring beyond Young.
This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams this season. They are slated to meet again in Terre Haute on Feb. 12.
Saturday’s game tips off at 5 p.m. EST. Murray State hits the road next to face Drake on Jan. 21, while Indiana State continues its road swing at Bradley on Jan. 21.
