Northern Iowa at Bradley

PEORIA, Ill. (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season Missouri Valley Conference clash is set for Saturday when the Northern Iowa Panthers visit the Bradley Braves at Carver Arena.

Northern Iowa (12-4, 2-1 MVC) aims to rebound from a midweek stumble, a 78-65 home loss to Belmont that snapped a two-game win streak. The Panthers had previously relied on a stout defense, holding three straight conference opponents under 66 points prior to the Belmont game. Guard Max Weisbrod, coming off a 12-point effort in that loss, will be a key facilitator for a Panthers squad seeking its first road conference win.

Bradley (11-6, 2-2) enters with momentum after a dominant 93-66 victory over Drake, showcasing its high-scoring potential. The Braves’ offense has been volatile in league play, however, following that win with a 20-point loss at Murray State. Forward AJ Smith provides a consistent spark for Bradley; he scored a season-high 18 points in the win over Drake and has been a steady contributor on both ends.

The matchup features contrasting styles. Northern Iowa prefers a methodical pace and ranks among the league’s best defensive units. Bradley, which scored 108 points in a triple-overtime win at Indiana State last month, looks to push the tempo and score in transition.

This game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 6 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. With the crowded MVC standings taking shape, Saturday’s result will provide an important benchmark for both contenders.
