Colorado State at Grand Canyon
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Two teams looking to regain momentum after holiday setbacks will meet Saturday when the Colorado State Rams visit the Grand Canyon Antelopes in a nonconference men’s basketball clash.
The game at Grand Canyon University Arena pits teams with nearly identical records. Colorado State (9-4) enters having dropped two of its last three, including a 75-62 home loss to Nevada on Dec. 30. Grand Canyon (8-4) has won three straight since a six-point loss to Oklahoma State on Dec. 6.
Both squads feature high-scoring guards who will be focal points. For Colorado State, Brandon Rechsteiner has been a consistent offensive force, averaging 12.4 points over his last five games. He scored 14 points in the loss to Nevada. The Rams will need his production to counter a Grand Canyon defense that has held opponents to an average of 65.8 points during its current win streak.
The Antelopes are powered by Jaden Henley, who is coming off a career-high 29-point performance in a 91-78 win over IUPUI on Dec. 22. Over his last four games, Henley is averaging 17.3 points, providing a dynamic scoring punch for a GCU team that averages 76.8 points per game at home.
Colorado State’s recent struggles include a 100-58 road loss at Utah State on Dec. 20, but the Rams have shown resilience with quality wins over Colorado and South Florida earlier this season. Grand Canyon’s most notable victory came against Utah in November, part of a strong home record where they are 6-1 this season.
This contest serves as a final nonconference tune-up before both teams dive into their respective league schedules next week. Colorado State opens Mountain West play at home against New Mexico on Jan. 6, while Grand Canyon begins Western Athletic Conference action at Boise State on Jan. 7.
Saturday’s matchup could hinge on perimeter defense and which team can better establish its tempo. The Rams will aim to control the pace and leverage Rechsteiner’s playmaking, while the Antelopes will look to feed off their home crowd and Henley’s hot hand to extend their winning streak to four.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST at GCU Arena.
