VCU at Duquesne
Preview: VCU Rams at Duquesne Dukes
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — A pivotal early Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball matchup is set for Saturday when the VCU Rams visit the Duquesne Dukes at A.J. Palumbo Center.
Both teams enter January with momentum, boasting nearly identical records. VCU (10-4) has won five of its last six, including a hard-fought 89-82 home victory over Saint Bonaventure on Wednesday. Duquesne (9-5) is riding a three-game winning streak, capped by a dramatic 89-83 double-overtime road win at Davidson on Tuesday.
The game features a compelling backcourt showdown. VCU will rely on guard Lazar Djokovic, who is coming off a season-high 23 points in 37 minutes against the Bonnies. Over his last five meaningful outings, Djokovic is averaging 16.4 points. He forms a potent scoring trio with Brandon Jennings and Terrence Hill, who combined for 62 points in the last game.
Duquesne counters with dynamic guard Tarence Guinyard, who was instrumental in the win at Davidson, playing 46 minutes and scoring 24 points with six assists. Guinyard has been a consistent offensive catalyst, averaging 21.8 points over a recent four-game stretch against Division I opponents, including a 21-point, 9-assist performance against Canisius.
The Rams have showcased a high-powered offense during their streak, scoring 100 or more points twice in December. The Dukes have also displayed offensive firepower, topping 100 points in two of their last three home games.
Historically, this series has been closely contested, adding another layer to the conference opener. The outcome could provide an early statement in the A-10 standings for either squad.
VCU begins a two-game road swing, while Duquesne opens a stretch of three home games in its first four January conference contests.
Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
