Wagner at Chicago State
Wagner Looks to Extend Win Streak Against Struggling Chicago State
CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Wagner Seahawks aim to continue their recent momentum when they visit the Chicago State Cougars in a non-conference men’s basketball matchup Friday at Jones Convocation Center.
Wagner (5-6) enters on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating Manor 74-57 on Dec. 22. The Seahawks have found their rhythm offensively during the stretch, averaging 81.3 points per victory.
A key contributor has been forward Binael Basil. He scored 19 points against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 17 and 17 points against Bryant & Stratton on Dec. 6. In the win over Manor, he nearly secured a double-double with nine rebounds and six points.
Chicago State (2-11) seeks to halt a two-game skid following a 78-58 loss at Indiana on Dec. 20. The Cougars’ season has been defined by road struggles, with their only victories coming at Loyola Chicago (84-75) on Dec. 14 and at home against St. Francis (85-62) on Dec. 1.
Guard Stephen Byard will be a player to watch for the Cougars. He led the team with nine points in the loss at Indiana and provided a steady presence during the upset win at Loyola.
This game, organized by the Northeast Conference, serves as a final non-conference tune-up for both programs before each embarks on its league schedule. Wagner begins NEC play on Jan. 4 against Stonehill, while Chicago State opens its independent slate against Long Island on Jan. 4.
The Seahawks have shown resilience in close games this season, with two overtime wins and two overtime losses. The Cougars, conversely, have faced several blowouts, losing five games by 30 or more points.
Friday’s contest pits Wagner’s rising confidence against a Chicago State team desperate for a positive result on its home floor. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST.
