Nebraska Remains Unbeaten With Commanding Win Over Wisconsin

LINCOLN, Neb. (Interstat) — The Nebraska Cornhuskers, riding a wave of offensive efficiency and defensive presence, delivered a commanding statement on their home floor Wednesday night, dismantling the Wisconsin Badgers 90-60 in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game at a sold-out Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The victory extended Nebraska’s perfect start to the season to 10 wins and no losses, while Wisconsin, which entered having won five of its last six, fell to 7-3. The 30-point margin of victory starkly contrasted the pregame expectations, which had Wisconsin as a slight 1.5-point favorite.

The most important part of the game was Nebraska’s overwhelming first-half performance, which effectively decided the contest before halftime. The Cornhuskers shot a blistering 54% from the field in the opening period, connecting on 7 of 16 three-point attempts, to build a 47-31 lead. This 16-point halftime advantage was fueled by a balanced and relentless attack that Wisconsin had no answer for.

Wisconsin struck first, with Nick Boyd converting two free throws just 19 seconds in and later hitting a three-pointer to give the Badgers an early 14-9 lead. However, the game turned decisively over the next eight minutes. Nebraska embarked on a 30-8 run, a stretch defined by clinical execution and stifling defense. The Cornhuskers’ ball movement was sharp, leading to open looks, while their length inside altered Wisconsin’s attempts.

Rienk Mast was instrumental during this surge, scoring 11 of his 17 points in the first half, including a hook shot and a three-pointer. Berke Buyuktuncel provided a major spark off the bench, contributing nine first-half points, two blocks, and several key rebounds. His defensive impact was immediate, and his offensive versatility stretched the Wisconsin defense. Meanwhile, the Badgers’ offense grew stagnant, plagued by poor shooting. They managed just 22 of 64 from the field for the game, a frigid 34.4%, and were a dismal 7 of 32 from beyond the arc.

The second half offered no reprieve for the visitors. Nebraska maintained its offensive rhythm, never allowing the lead to dip below 14 points and steadily expanding it. Any semblance of a Wisconsin run was quickly snuffed out by a Cornhusker basket, often in the paint or from deep. Braden Frager heated up after halftime, scoring 10 of his 15 points, including a three-pointer that pushed the lead to 84-69 with under seven minutes to play, effectively sealing the outcome.

Nebraska’s statistical dominance was comprehensive. The Cornhuskers outshot Wisconsin 54.1% to 34.4% from the field and 36.7% to 21.9% from three-point range. They also committed only eight turnovers while forcing 10, and their six blocked shots, led by Buyuktuncel’s two, underscored their defensive control of the lane. Nebraska’s offensive rating of 132.1 points per 100 possessions dwarfed Wisconsin’s mark of 84.2, illustrating the chasm in efficiency.

Individually for Nebraska, the scoring was well-distributed. Mast led all scorers with 17 points. Buyuktuncel finished with 14 points, two blocks, and two steals in just 19 minutes. Frager added 15 points, and Pryce Sandfort chipped in 14 points, three assists, and a block. Sam Hoiberg provided 12 points off the bench, and Jamarques Lawrence facilitated the offense with a game-high seven assists.

For Wisconsin, only Nick Boyd reached double figures, scoring 20 points to go with four assists. Nolan Winter added 10 points, but the Badgers’ offense, which typically features more ball movement, managed only four total assists for the entire game, matching their steal total.

The announced crowd of 13,831 witnessed Nebraska’s most impressive victory of the young season, a performance that will undoubtedly raise expectations for a team navigating a challenging conference schedule. Wisconsin, meanwhile, will look to regroup from its most lopsided defeat of the year as it prepares for a neutral-site clash with Villanova on Dec. 19.

Nebraska hits the road for its next contest, a conference matchup at Illinois on Saturday.
