Sun Devils Use Efficient Offense, Strong Finish to Defeat Utes
TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, the Arizona State Sun Devils used a dominant performance at the rim and a decisive second-half surge to pull away from the Utah Utes for a 73-60 victory in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
A crowd of 7,718 watched as the Sun Devils, improving to 15-14, avenged a loss from earlier in the season and swept the regular-season series. Utah, which had defeated Arizona State in their previous meeting just over three weeks prior, fell to 10-19 with the defeat.
The most critical phase of the contest came early in the second half, when Arizona State transformed a narrow 34-24 halftime lead into a commanding double-digit advantage from which Utah never recovered. The Utes, who shot just 39 percent from the field for the game, could not sustain any offensive rhythm against the Sun Devils’ length and shot-altering presence.
Arizona State’s defensive anchor was 7-foot-1 center Massamba Diop of Rufisque, Senegal, who recorded four of his team’s nine blocks to go with 14 points. His presence, combined with three blocks from 6-foot-11 forward Santiago Trouet of Buenos Aires, Argentina, who added 12 points, consistently deterred Utah drives and created a significant disparity in interior defense. Utah managed only three blocks as a team.
The offensive catalyst for the Sun Devils was guard Maurice Odum of the Bronx, New York. He led all scorers with 15 points, but his impact was felt throughout the game with four assists and a key role in facilitating Arizona State’s more efficient attack. The Sun Devils shot 49.1 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from 3-point range, compared to Utah’s 39 percent and 36.4 percent, respectively.
Anthony Johnson of Midfield, Alabama, provided crucial secondary scoring with 13 points, while Allen Mukeba of Charleroi, Belgium, chipped in six points off the bench, all coming during the pivotal second-half stretch that extended the Arizona State lead.
Utah was led by forward Keanu Dawes of Houston, Texas, who scored 16 points. Guard Don McHenry of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, added 14 points, but the Utes’ offense was hampered by a lack of ball movement, registering only four assists against eight turnovers. Arizona State also protected the ball well, committing just five turnovers.
The game’s tempo and efficiency metrics underscored Arizona State’s control. Despite having two fewer possessions, the Sun Devils scored 13 more points, posting an offensive rating of 124.4 to Utah’s 97.9. The Utes also struggled from the free-throw line, making only six of nine attempts.
The first half set the tone for Utah’s offensive woes. After a quick start gave them an early lead, the Utes went cold, managing only 24 points by the break as Arizona State’s defense tightened. The Sun Devils led by 10 at halftime and then opened the second period with a 7-2 run, quickly pushing the lead to 15 and forcing Utah into a chasing position for the remainder of the game.
Every time Utah showed a sign of life, Arizona State had an answer, often in the form of a blocked shot or a timely 3-pointer. The Sun Devils’ ability to convert Utah misses into transition opportunities, coupled with their stifling half-court defense, prevented the Utes from ever mounting a serious threat in the final 20 minutes.
The victory moved Arizona State above .500 as it heads into the final week of the regular season, while Utah’s difficult season continued with its fourth loss in five games. Both teams now look ahead to crucial conference matchups, with Arizona State set to host Kansas and Utah preparing to welcome Colorado on Tuesday.
