UCLA at Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — A surging UCLA looks to bolster its postseason résumé when it visits a struggling Minnesota team in a Big Ten men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Williams Arena.
The Bruins (19-9, 11-6 Big Ten) have won three of their last four, including a dominant 81-62 victory over Southern California on Tuesday. They are led by dynamic guard Donovan Dent, who is coming off a 30-point, seven-assist performance against the Trojans. Over his last seven games, Dent is averaging 16.3 points and 9.0 assists, including three double-doubles.
UCLA’s offense, which has scored 80 or more points in four of its last six wins, will test a Minnesota defense allowing 69.2 points per game in conference play.
The Golden Gophers (13-15, 6-11) have lost two straight and six of their last eight, most recently falling 77-67 at Michigan. Their offense leans heavily on forward Cade Tyson, who has scored 20 or more points in three of the last five games. Tyson is averaging 19.4 points and 5.4 rebounds over that stretch, including a 27-point, 10-rebound effort in a win over Rutgers on Feb. 21.
Minnesota, which has lost four home games this season by an average of 5.5 points, will need a strong defensive effort to contain Dent and UCLA’s perimeter attack. The Bruins average 78.1 points per game, while the Gophers average 70.7.
This is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season. UCLA holds a 6-4 all-time series edge, though the programs have not met since 2013.
Following this game, UCLA hosts Nebraska on March 3, while Minnesota travels to Indiana on March 4.
