Hawks Soar Past Patriots Behind Simpson’s 23 Points

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Derek Simpson orchestrated a dominant first-half surge and Saint Joseph’s never looked back, avenging a loss from earlier this month with an 81-63 victory over George Mason in an Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Hagan Arena.

The Hawks, fueled by a 19-point performance from Simpson in the opening period, built a commanding 44-25 halftime lead and withstood a series of second-half pushes from the Patriots to secure the win before a crowd of 2,221.

The most important stretch of the game came early, as Saint Joseph’s transformed a tight contest into a lopsided affair with a blistering 24-5 run over a nine-minute span in the first half. The surge turned a 10-7 lead into a 34-12 advantage, effectively deciding the game before the intermission. Simpson was the catalyst, scoring 11 points during the run while also setting up teammates Jaiden Glover and Austin Williford for key baskets. The Hawks’ defense was equally pivotal, forcing six George Mason turnovers and holding the Patriots to just 2-of-12 shooting during the decisive stretch.

Simpson, a guard from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, finished with a game-high 23 points and eight assists in 33 minutes, controlling the tempo and exploiting defensive gaps. His backcourt mate, freshman Khaafiq Myers of Philadelphia, added 12 points and six assists, providing crucial secondary playmaking.

George Mason, which had defeated Saint Joseph’s 60-52 on its home floor on Feb. 7, was led by center Riley Allenspach. The 6-foot-11 junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, matched Simpson with 23 points but received limited consistent support. Guard Devin Booker, a Philadelphia native, contributed nine points off the bench.

The Patriots struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Saint Joseph’s active defense, particularly in the first half where they shot poorly from the field. They showed more life after halftime, cutting the deficit to 14 points on several occasions, but each time the Hawks had an answer, often from Simpson or Glover.

Glover, a sophomore from Brooklyn, New York, was a constant threat, scoring 21 points, including three 3-pointers. His back-to-back triples early in the second half, both assisted by Simpson, snuffed out a potential George Mason rally and pushed the lead back to 19.

Forward Dasear Haskins provided a strong interior presence for the Hawks with 12 points, five defensive rebounds and a blocked shot. His dunk off a Simpson feed with 1:23 left in the first half sent the Hawks into the break with their largest lead at 19 points.

For George Mason, the loss continued a recent slide in conference play, dropping their record to 21-7 overall. The Patriots have now lost three of their last four A-10 games after a strong start to league play. Saint Joseph’s improved to 18-10, bolstering its position in the conference standings with its third win in four games.

The game’s result flipped the pregame expectations, as George Mason had entered as a slight one-point favorite. The combined score of 144 points fell under the betting total of 137.

Saint Joseph’s will look to build on the momentum Saturday when it travels to face Rhode Island. George Mason returns home Saturday to host Saint Bonaventure, seeking to halt its recent skid.

The victory gave Saint Joseph’s a measure of payback and highlighted the Hawks’ potent offensive balance when Simpson is facilitating at a high level. His ability to score and create during the game’s critical early juncture set a tone that George Mason, despite Allenspach’s efficient scoring, could never overcome.
