Guy-King’s 34 Points Lead Central Arkansas to Upset Win Over Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a high-stakes ASUN Conference clash that defied pregame projections, the Central Arkansas Bears delivered a stunning road victory, upsetting the Austin Peay Governors 93-88 on Wednesday night at a raucous Winfield Dunn Center.

The game, played before a crowd of 4,026, was a stark contrast to expectations. National statistical models had given the Governors a 79% chance to win, and the betting markets had installed them as a 3.5-point favorite. Instead, the contest evolved into a thrilling offensive showcase that saw both teams combine for 181 points, soaring over the pregame over/under line of 148.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the final minutes of a back-and-forth second half. With Austin Peay clinging to an 86-85 lead after two Tate McCubbin free throws with 33 seconds remaining, Central Arkansas’s star guard Javion Guy-King took over. Fouled on the ensuing inbound, Guy-King calmly sank both free throws to put the Bears ahead 87-86.

On the next possession, Austin Peay’s Collin Parker, who had been brilliant all night, committed a costly turnover, stripped by Central Arkansas’s Malchiah Marable with 15 seconds left. Fouled immediately, Camren Hunter hit one of two free throws to extend the lead to 88-86. After a Governors timeout, Parker turned it over again, this time picked off by Luke Moore. That led to a decisive transition layup by Guy-King, assisted by Moore, to push the advantage to 90-86 with just four seconds on the clock, effectively sealing the victory despite a last-second dunk by Austin Peay’s Rashaud Marshall.

The game was a tale of two explosive individual performances. Guy-King, a 6-foot-6 junior from Little Rock, Arkansas, erupted for a career-high 34 points, leading all scorers and carrying the Bears’ offense at crucial junctures. His performance marked a dramatic return to form after scoring just 10 total points in his previous two games combined. He was complemented by backcourt mate Ty Robinson, who added 23 points, and Camren Hunter, who chipped in 20.

For Austin Peay, Collin Parker was equally magnificent, finishing with 29 points, six assists and a block in 38 minutes of action. Rashaud Marshall contributed 19 points and four assists, while Anton Brookshire added 17 points. The Governors’ backcourt of Zyree Collins and Brookshire combined for 28 points and 11 assists, but the team’s 15 turnovers, including several in the final minute, proved fatal.

The first half set the tone for the shootout, with Austin Peay taking a narrow 46-44 lead into the break behind hot outside shooting. The Governors maintained a small lead for much of the second half, but could never shake the resilient Bears. Central Arkansas finally drew even and then took the lead for good in the final minute, executing flawlessly under pressure while the Governors faltered.

With the win, Central Arkansas improves to 19-11 overall and continues its push in the ASUN standings. The Bears have now won seven of their last nine games. Austin Peay, which had been riding a five-game winning streak, falls to 21-7. The loss is a significant setback for the Governors’ conference title aspirations.

Central Arkansas will look to build on this momentum when it returns home to host Queens (N.C.) on Saturday. Austin Peay, meanwhile, must regroup quickly for a road test at Bellarmine, also on Saturday.
