North Alabama Holds Off Bellarmine in ASUN Conference Matchup
FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a tense ASUN Conference clash that came down to the final seconds, the North Alabama Lions held off a persistent Bellarmine squad for a 73-68 victory on Wednesday night at Flowers Hall.
The game, played before a crowd of 2,251, was a tale of two halves defined by runs and resilience. Bellarmine, the visiting Knights, emerged from a sluggish start to build a five-point lead late in the first half, only to see North Alabama close the period on a 12-2 surge. That pivotal stretch gave the Lions a 34-29 halftime advantage, a margin they would protect, but never comfortably extend, throughout the final 20 minutes.
Bellarmine guard Jack Karasinski, a 6-foot-7 junior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, kept his team within striking distance with a game-high 23 points. His scoring, particularly in the paint, answered nearly every North Alabama attempt to pull away. The Lions, however, countered with a balanced and efficient offensive attack. Four players scored in double figures, led by Donte Bacchus of Homewood, Alabama, who contributed 20 points and two blocks. Dallas Howell from Coffee Springs, Alabama, added 18 points, while Corneilous Williams of Beaumont, Mississippi, controlled the interior with 17 points and several key rebounds. Cortez Graham-Howard of Nashville, Tennessee, rounded out the quartet with 15 points.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than seven points. Every time North Alabama seemed poised to break the game open, Bellarmine responded, often through Karasinski or guard Kenyon Goodin, who finished with 12 points. The Knights finally drew even at 61-61 with just under three minutes remaining after a driving layup and subsequent free throw by Karasinski.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final minute. With the score tied and momentum swinging, North Alabama executed under pressure. Following a timeout, Corneilous Williams found Donte Bacchus for a layup to put the Lions ahead 65-63 with 1:49 left. After a Bellarmine miss, Bacchus was fouled and sank both free throws to extend the lead to four. Bellarmine’ Goodin answered with a clutch 3-pointer off an assist from Tyler Doyle, slicing the deficit to 67-66 with 10 seconds remaining.
North Alabama’s composure was tested immediately. Inbounding under their own basket, Dallas Howell was fouled and calmly made both free throws to push the lead back to three. Bellarmine raced downcourt, but Goodin’s potential game-tying 3-point attempt from the wing missed. North Alabama’s Kevin de Kovachich secured the rebound, was fouled, and iced the game with two more free throws, providing the final five-point margin.
The victory improved North Alabama’s season record to 9-19 overall. Bellarmine, which has now lost three consecutive games, fell to 11-18. The Lions avenged a loss in the teams’ previous meeting earlier this season.
Statistically, the game was won at the free-throw line and on second-chance opportunities. North Alabama capitalized on Bellarmine’s foul trouble, particularly in the bonus situations late in each half. The Lions also managed several critical offensive rebounds in the closing minutes, extending possessions and draining the clock.
Bellarmine’s effort was bolstered by Brian Waddell, who scored 11 points. The Knights, however, could not overcome the Lions’ balanced scoring and timely defensive stops when they mattered most.
Both teams return to conference play on Saturday. North Alabama travels to face West Georgia, while Bellarmine returns home to host Austin Peay.
