Purdue Fort Wayne at Cleveland State
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — A pair of Horizon League teams heading in opposite directions will meet Sunday when the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons visit the Cleveland State Vikings at Wolstein Center.
Purdue Fort Wayne (15-13) enters the contest having lost four of its last five, including a 71-87 road loss to Northern Kentucky on Wednesday. The Mastodons will look to guard DeAndre Craig, who erupted for 24 points in that defeat, to provide a spark. Craig has been inconsistent but potent, scoring 19 points in a win over Robert Morris on Jan. 31 and 14 points against Youngstown State on Feb. 4.
Cleveland State (10-18) has lost three straight, most recently a 82-106 defeat at Youngstown State on Wednesday. The Vikings rely heavily on the scoring of guard Jaidon Lipscomb, who poured in a career-high 32 points in that loss. Lipscomb has been a bright spot, averaging 18.9 points over his last seven games, including a 21-point performance in a road win at Milwaukee on Feb. 1.
The Mastodons won the season’s first meeting, 74-71 at home on Jan. 4. Purdue Fort Wayne has struggled on the road in conference play, however, posting a 3-7 record away from home.
For Cleveland State, the game represents a chance to halt a late-season slide and build momentum before the Horizon League tournament. The Vikings have shown flashes, winning three straight from Jan. 30 to Feb. 4, but have since been unable to sustain that form.
Purdue Fort Wayne holds the clear advantage in the standings, but the Mastodons’ recent road woes and Lipscomb’s high-scoring ability for the Vikings could make this a closer contest than the records suggest. The matchup will feature two of the league’s more dynamic guards in Craig and Lipscomb, whose performances will likely dictate the tempo and outcome.
Tipoff is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
