Tulsa Dominates Texas-San Antonio in American Athletic Conference Matchup

TULSA, Okla. (Interstat) — Ade Popoola scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, David Green added 27 points and Tulsa overwhelmed Texas-San Antonio from the opening tip, cruising to a 100-74 victory in an American Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Sunday at Donald Reynolds Center.

The Golden Hurricane, improving to 22-6 overall, dominated every facet, turning defense into instant offense to build an insurmountable first-half lead. Tulsa forced 16 Roadrunner turnovers, converting them into 19 points, and outscored UTSA 31-10 in fastbreak opportunities. The home team also controlled the interior, outscoring the visitors 44-28 in the paint.

The most important stretch of the game came early, as Tulsa established a commanding tone with a devastating 23-4 run over a six-minute span in the first half. After UTSA’s Brent Moss opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, Tulsa’s defense clamped down. Popoola, a 6-foot-5 guard from St. Louis, ignited the surge with a steal and a 3-pointer, then capped it with a dunk off a Tylen Riley assist to give the Golden Hurricane a 23-7 lead with just over 14 minutes remaining before halftime. During the run, Tulsa forced five Roadrunner turnovers, leading directly to nine points, and consistently beat UTSA down the floor for easy baskets.

Texas-San Antonio, which fell to 5-22, never recovered. The Roadrunners showed brief resistance, cutting the deficit to 11 points on a Jamir Simpson 3-pointer with 5:51 left in the first half, but Tulsa answered with a 10-2 spurt to push its lead back to 19. The Golden Hurricane led 53-37 at intermission and maintained at least a 16-point advantage throughout the second half, leading by as many as 28.

Popoola’s double-double led a balanced and efficient Tulsa attack. He added an assist and a block in 30 minutes, shooting 8 of 14 from the field, including 5 of 10 from beyond the arc. Green, a 6-foot-7 forward from Apopka, Florida, was equally potent, making 10 of his 15 field goal attempts. Riley, a guard from Las Vegas, directed the offense with 13 points and six assists, while Romad Dean contributed 11 points and six rebounds off the bench.

For UTSA, Dorian Hayes scored 19 points and Simpson added 20. Daniel Akitoby provided a spark off the bench with 10 points in 15 minutes. The Roadrunners shot consistently but unspectacularly in both halves, scoring exactly 37 points in each period, but could not match Tulsa’s offensive firepower or defensive intensity.

A crowd of 3,618 watched as Tulsa solidified its position near the top of the conference standings. The Golden Hurricane shot 53.2 percent from the field compared to UTSA’s 43.5 percent and won the rebounding battle 39-31.

The victory extended Tulsa’s home success this season and continued a difficult campaign for Texas-San Antonio, which has lost four of its last five games. The Roadrunners have surrendered 100 or more points three times this season.

Tulsa next travels to face Tulane on Wednesday. Texas-San Antonio returns home to host East Carolina, also on Wednesday.
