Spartans Rally Past Buckeyes in Big Ten Matchup
EAST LANSING, Mich. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a stark contrast in halves, the Michigan State Spartans overcame a sluggish start and a brilliant individual performance from Ohio State’s Bruce Thornton to secure a 66-60 victory in a pivotal Big Ten Conference men’s basketball clash on Sunday at a sold-out Breslin Center.
The visiting Buckeyes, led by Thornton’s game-high 32 points, controlled the first half with defensive intensity, taking a 26-23 lead into the break. Ohio State limited Michigan State to 23 first-half points, forcing nine Spartan turnovers while committing only four of their own. The Buckeyes’ interior defense was particularly effective early, holding Michigan State to just 26 points in the paint for the game.
The second half, however, told a completely different story. Michigan State erupted for 43 points after halftime, a surge powered by a dominant performance in the paint and a decisive advantage at the free-throw line. The Spartans outrebounded Ohio State 12-3 on the offensive glass, leading to 18 second-chance points and a 44-30 overall rebounding edge.
The most important part of the game was Michigan State’s relentless second-half assault, spearheaded by Carson Cooper. The Spartans’ 6-foot-11 junior from Jackson, Michigan, was the engine of the comeback, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Cooper scored 14 of his points after halftime, consistently punishing the Buckeyes in the post and drawing fouls. His effort at the line, where he went 6-for-6 in the second half, was part of a larger disparity; Michigan State attempted 25 free throws, making 18, while Ohio State went just 10-for-17.
Thornton, a guard from Fairburn, Georgia, was spectacular in defeat, playing all but 40 seconds and carrying the Ohio State offense. He shot 13-for-24 from the field but received limited support, as the rest of the Buckeyes combined to shoot 10-for-28. Christoph Tilly added 10 points and eight rebounds for Ohio State, which fell to 17-10 overall and 7-7 in the Big Ten.
While Thornton kept Ohio State within striking distance late, Michigan State’s balance and physicality proved too much. Jeremy Fears orchestrated the Spartan offense with eight assists and 11 points, while Jordan Scott contributed 12 points, including a critical three-pointer during the second-half run that stretched the lead. Jaxon Kohler was a force on the boards with 10 rebounds, nine of them defensive, to go with nine points.
The Buckeyes’ offensive struggles extended beyond Thornton’s supporting cast. As a team, they shot just 4-for-22 from three-point range and managed only five assists on 23 made field goals. Their offensive rating of 98.2 points per 100 possessions paled in comparison to Michigan State’s more efficient 103.3.
Michigan State, which entered the game as a 10.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, saw its pregame win probability of 84.8% validated by the second-half performance. The Spartans improved to 22-5 overall and 12-2 in conference play, maintaining their position atop the Big Ten standings.
The game’s total of 126 points fell well under the betting over/under line of 148.5, a testament to the defensive grind of the first half.
Ohio State looks to rebound on the road Wednesday at Iowa. Michigan State faces a quick turnaround with a major test Thursday, traveling to face Purdue in a matchup of conference title contenders.
