Hawks Rally Past Bonnies in Atlantic 10 Road Victory
KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — Derek Simpson scored 23 points and dished out seven assists, and Saint Joseph’s used a decisive second-half surge to overcome a halftime deficit and defeat Saint Bonaventure 71-65 in an Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Reilly Center.
The Hawks, who trailed by two at the break, improved to 16-10 overall and 9-4 in the conference. The Bonnies fell to 14-12 and 6-7.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the second half’s middle stages, where Saint Joseph’s transformed a defensive struggle into a contest controlled by its offense. After a first half where both teams shot below 35% from the floor, the Hawks found their rhythm. Trailing 33-30 early in the second period, Saint Joseph’s unleashed a 15-4 run over a five-minute span to seize control.
Simpson, a guard from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, was the catalyst, scoring or assisting on 10 points during the pivotal stretch. His driving layup at the 16:53 mark gave the Hawks their first lead since the game’s opening minutes at 35-33. He then found Austin Williford for a 3-pointer and later assisted on a Dasear Haskins layup, pushing the lead to 42-35 and forcing a Saint Bonaventure timeout.
Saint Bonaventure, which had led 30-28 at halftime behind 13 first-half points from Darryl Simmons, struggled to counterpunch consistently. The Hawks’ defense, anchored by Justice Ajogbor’s four blocks, tightened, holding the Bonnies to just two field goals over a critical seven-minute period while building their advantage.
The Bonnies chipped away, closing to within 58-56 on a Frank Mitchell hook shot with 6:52 remaining. But Simpson answered by drawing a foul on a 3-point attempt and calmly sinking all three free throws. On the ensuing possession, he grabbed a defensive rebound and led a fast break, feeding Jaiden Glover for a dunk to extend the lead back to seven and effectively halt the Bonnies’ final serious threat.
Simpson’s performance marked a return to form after scoring 11 and 13 points in his previous two outings. He was supported by Ajogbor, who had 12 points and five assists, and Williford, who added 14 points. Haskins and Glover each contributed 10 points.
For Saint Bonaventure, Simmons led all scorers with 18 points. Mitchell posted a double-double with 12 points and six assists, while Dasonte Bowen added 13 points. Andrew Osasuyi was a defensive force off the bench, blocking eight shots, but the Bonnies’ offense never fully ignited, finishing the game shooting just 36.2% from the field and committing 11 turnovers.
Saint Joseph’s won despite being out-assisted 7-4 and out-blocked 9-6, overcoming those deficits with timely scoring and by forcing Saint Bonaventure into inefficient possessions. The Hawks also avenged a loss from earlier in the season, having defeated the Bonnies 68-64 in Philadelphia on Jan. 14.
The game, played before a crowd of 3,678, saw Saint Joseph’s improve its road record in conference play, while Saint Bonaventure’s hopes for a top-tier conference tournament seeding took a hit. Saint Joseph’s will host Loyola Chicago on Saturday. Saint Bonaventure travels to face Richmond on Saturday.
