Dayton Upsets George Mason on Road Behind L’Etang’s 21 Points
FAIRFAX, Va. (Interstat) — In a pivotal Atlantic 10 clash that defied pregame expectations, the Dayton Flyers delivered a commanding road performance, defeating the George Mason Patriots 82-67 on Wednesday night at EagleBank Arena.
Fueled by a dominant first-half offensive display and a standout performance from center Amael L’Etang, Dayton improved to 17-8 overall and handed George Mason just its sixth loss of the season, dropping the Patriots to 21-6. The Flyers entered as slight underdogs but controlled the contest for nearly its entirety, leading by as many as 18 points in the second half.
The most critical phase of the game came immediately from the opening tip. Dayton established its authority with a blistering 9-0 run to start the contest, a stretch that set the tone for the evening. The 7-foot-1 L’Etang from Toulouse, France, won the opening jump ball and scored the game’s first four points on assists from De’Shayne Montgomery and Jaiun Simon. After a George Mason free throw, guard Javon Bennett of Orlando, Florida, drilled a three-pointer to cap the run, forcing an early sense of urgency from the home team.
George Mason, which had won 61.6% of its games according to the ELO projection system and was a pregame favorite, never fully recovered from that initial onslaught. While the Patriots chipped away at times, Dayton’s lead never dipped below five points after the opening burst. The Flyers shot a scorching 55.8% from the field in the game and an even more impressive 52.4% from three-point range, consistently answering any Patriot push with timely baskets.
L’Etang was the focal point, finishing with 21 points on efficient 9-of-12 shooting, adding a block and a steal in 32 minutes. His early activity inside established Dayton’s interior presence and opened driving lanes for his teammates. Bennett was equally crucial, scoring a game-high 22 points, including four three-pointers. The backcourt duo of Montgomery and Jordan Derkack of Colonia, New Jersey, facilitated the offense, combining for nine assists.
For George Mason, Jahari Long of Houston led the way with 17 points, while Fatt Hill of Bessemer, Alabama, added 15. Center Riley Allenspach of Charlotte contributed 12 points. The Patriots struggled to generate consistent offense against Dayton’s active defense, which recorded seven steals and four blocks. George Mason’s offensive rating of 105.6 paled in comparison to Dayton’s elite mark of 126.2, as the Flyers scored 1.262 points per possession.
Dayton took a 43-36 lead into halftime and methodically extended its advantage after the break. A key sequence early in the second half saw the Flyers push their lead to 15 points. After a Hill jumper for George Mason, L’Etang answered with a three-pointer, followed by a Montgomery driving score and free throw. When George Mason’s Kory Mincy committed an offensive foul on the ensuing possession, the Patriots’ momentum was stifled.
The Patriots made a brief run to cut the deficit to 52-44 midway through the second half, but Dayton responded with a 7-0 spurt, highlighted by a Bennett three-pointer and a Jaiun Simon triple assisted by Keonte Jones. George Mason would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Statistically, Dayton’s efficiency was the story. Beyond their stellar shooting percentages, the Flyers outscored George Mason 34-26 in the paint and committed only seven turnovers. While George Mason held an 18-13 advantage at the free-throw line and out-blocked Dayton 6-4, they could not overcome Dayton’s superior shot-making and ball security.
The victory marks a significant bounce-back for Dayton, which had suffered a lopsided 99-73 loss at VCU in its previous road game. George Mason, meanwhile, sees a two-game winning streak snapped as it heads into a challenging stretch of conference play.
Dayton next hosts Duquesne on Saturday. George Mason travels to face Saint Joseph’s next Wednesday.
