Wright State Holds Off Cleveland State Rally for Horizon League Win

CLEVELAND (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering offensive display, the Wright State Raiders exacted revenge and snapped a two-game skid with a decisive 102-90 victory over the Cleveland State Vikings in a Horizon League men’s basketball contest Sunday at Wolstein Center.

The Raiders, who fell to the Vikings just three weeks prior, left no doubt this time, constructing a massive 15-point halftime lead and weathering a furious second-half rally from the home team. The win improved Wright State to 17-10 overall, while Cleveland State dropped to 10-17.

The most critical phase of the game was its opening act. Wright State came out scorching, shooting a remarkable 70.6 percent from 3-point range in the first half. This early barrage, combined with stifling interior defense that produced seven blocks, allowed the Raiders to build a commanding 51-36 advantage by the intermission. The Vikings, by contrast, struggled to find any consistent rhythm against Wright State’s length and activity.

Wright State’s offensive efficiency was historic. The Raiders scored 102 points on just 76 possessions, translating to an elite offensive rating of 134.6. They shot 61.8 percent from the field overall and were a near-perfect 12 of 17 from beyond the arc. The Raiders also dominated at the free-throw line, making 22 of 29 attempts.

Cleveland State mounted a significant challenge after halftime, nearly doubling its first-half output by scoring 54 points. The Vikings shot 50 percent from the field in the second period and trimmed the deficit to single digits on multiple occasions, fueled by a 21-8 advantage in points off turnovers. However, every Viking push was met with a timely response from the poised Raiders, who matched their first-half total with another 51 points after the break to maintain control.

The individual performances underscored the offensive nature of the contest. Wright State was led by a dynamic backcourt duo. Guard TJ Burch, the top star for the Raiders, orchestrated the offense with 23 points and eight assists. Forward Alex Bruskotter, a native of Shelby, Ohio, provided a game-high 25 points on efficient shooting. The Raiders also received a double-double from forward Michael Imariagbe, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and 18 points from forward Dominic Pangonis.

Cleveland State’s charge was led almost single-handedly by guard Ice Emery of Appleton, Wisconsin. Emery erupted for 30 points in just 25 minutes, spearheading the second-half surge. Forward Josiah Harris added 14 points and six rebounds for the Vikings.

Despite the loss, Cleveland State won several statistical battles, including assists, steals, turnovers committed, and points off turnovers. Yet, they could not overcome Wright State’s transcendent shooting performance and significant edges in rebounding, blocks, and free-throw accuracy.

The game, attended by 2,097 fans, easily surpassed the pregame over/under line. Wright State, which was a 6.5-point favorite pregame, covered the spread with the double-digit victory.

Wright State looks to build on the momentum when it hosts IU Indy on Thursday. Cleveland State aims to regroup quickly with a road game at Youngstown State on Wednesday.
