Bobcats Top Grizzlies in Big Sky Showdown
MISSOULA, Mont. (Interstat) — In a critical Big Sky Conference showdown, the Montana State Bobcats executed a decisive second-half surge to defeat the Montana Grizzlies 82-71 on Saturday night at a raucous Dahlberg Arena.
The victory, witnessed by 5,017 fans, completed a regular-season series sweep for the Bobcats over their archrivals and significantly bolstered their postseason positioning. Montana State improved to 15-11 overall, while Montana fell to 14-12.
The game’s most pivotal sequence arrived early in the second half, transforming a narrow contest into a commanding Bobcat lead. Holding a slim 38-37 halftime edge, Montana State erupted with a 15-2 run over the first four minutes of the final period. The burst was fueled by stifling defense and efficient transition offense. Jed Miller ignited the run with a 3-pointer, Christian King converted a layup through a foul, and Chris Hodges punctuated it with a powerful dunk off a Patrick McMahon assist, forcing a Montana timeout with the Bobcats ahead 53-39.
That explosive stretch proved insurmountable for the Grizzlies. Montana State’s defense, which generated 16 points off turnovers compared to Montana’s six, consistently disrupted the home team’s rhythm. The Bobcats also held an 8-4 advantage in fastbreak points, capitalizing on the very opportunities their defense created.
While Montana’s high-scoring duo of Te’Jon Sawyer and Money Williams kept the Grizzlies within striking distance, combining for 47 points, they lacked consistent support. Sawyer, a 6-foot-8 forward from San Francisco, finished with 22 points. Williams, a guard from Oakland, California, led all scorers with 25 points and added four assists. Grant Kepley facilitated the offense with seven assists.
Montana State countered with a more balanced and sustained offensive attack. Miller, a guard from Agoura Hills, California, spearheaded the effort with 19 points and five assists, consistently making plays during the game-changing runs. His backcourt mate, McMahon from Palmer, Alaska, added 12 points. The Bobcats’ frontcourt provided crucial production, with Jaden Steppe of Tualatin, Oregon, scoring 15 points and blocking two shots in just 16 minutes of action. Jeremiah Davis contributed 10 points and three assists, while Hodges and King each chipped in 10 points. King also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The first half was a tightly contested affair featuring 10 lead changes. Both teams shot efficiently from the perimeter early, with Sawyer hitting three first-half 3-pointers for Montana and McMahon connecting twice from deep for the Bobcats. Montana State took its one-point lead into the break after a defensive stand that saw Davis block a Sawyer dunk attempt just before the halftime buzzer.
Despite the double-digit deficit for most of the second half, Montana made several pushes to close the gap. Each time, the Bobcats had an answer, often from Miller or a key basket in the paint, where both teams finished with 28 points. Montana State’s ability to maintain its composure and execute in the final minutes at the free-throw line sealed the 11-point victory, defying the pregame statistical projections that heavily favored the Grizzlies on their home floor.
The result creates a clear separation in the conference standings as the regular season enters its final weeks. Montana State will look to build on this momentum during a road trip to Weber State and Idaho State next week. Montana, seeking to rebound, hits the road for games at the same two opponents.
