Wagner Rallies Past Stonehill for Road Win

EASTON, Mass. (Interstat) — Binael Basil recorded a dominant double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds, leading Wagner to a 68-57 victory over Stonehill in a Northeast Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Merkert Gymnasium.

The Seahawks, who avenged a nine-point home loss to the Skyhawks from just over a month ago, improved to 9-15 overall. Stonehill fell to 8-18.

The game’s pivotal stretch came early in the second half, transforming what had been a defensive struggle into a contest Wagner controlled. After leading 26-24 at halftime in a period where both teams shot below 30% from the floor, the Seahawks opened the second half with a decisive 16-4 run. The surge was fueled by interior dominance and forced turnovers, pushing Wagner’s lead to 42-28 with just over 15 minutes remaining. Stonehill never recovered, unable to cut the deficit to single digits for the remainder of the game.

Basil, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound forward from Ottawa, was the engine for Wagner. He played 31 minutes, shooting 7 of 17 from the field and adding an assist and a block. His 16 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass, were central to Wagner’s overwhelming 48-34 advantage in total rebounds and a 15-7 edge in second-chance opportunities. This performance marked a significant rebound for Basil, who had been held to nine points and four rebounds combined over his previous two games.

Nick Jones supported Basil with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists for Wagner. Michael Cooper added nine points and four rebounds off the bench, while Eddie Placer contributed eight points.

Stonehill was led by Chas Stinson’s game-high 18 points. The guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, also had four rebounds and two assists. Davante Hackett added nine points, and Raymond Espinal-Guzman chipped in seven.

The statistical story favored Wagner in nearly every facet. The Seahawks scored 32 points in the paint to Stonehill’s 18 and converted 11 Skyhawk turnovers into 19 points. While Stonehill managed a slight 15-8 edge in fast-break points and made nine three-pointers to Wagner’s six, their overall shooting was anemic. The Skyhawks finished the game shooting 31.7% from the field and just 30% from beyond the arc.

Wagner’s offense, though not efficient at 36.9% shooting, was more effective, posting an offensive rating of 102.2 points per 100 possessions compared to Stonehill’s 81.2. The Seahawks also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 14 of 18 attempts.

The result defied pregame projections, as Stonehill had been installed as a 2.5-point favorite by oddsmakers and statistical models gave the Skyhawks a 65% probability of victory.

Wagner looks to build on the win quickly, traveling to face Long Island on Monday. Stonehill’s next contest is on the road at New Haven on Thursday.
