Villanova Rides Strong First Half to Road Win Over Creighton
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — In a commanding wire-to-wire performance, the Villanova Wildcats avenged an earlier conference loss by stifling the Creighton Bluejays early and holding off a late rally for an 80-69 victory in a Big East men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at a sold-out CenturyLink Center.
The Wildcats, improving to 20-5 overall, established their dominance from the opening tip, building a 14-point halftime lead and extending it to as many as 23 points in the second half before the Bluejays mounted a frantic, but ultimately insufficient, comeback attempt in the final minutes.
The most critical phase of the game was its outset. Villanova set a physical, defensive tone that completely disrupted Creighton’s offensive flow. The Bluejays, now 13-13, missed their first 10 field goal attempts and did not score until a Jasen Green tip-in with 16:28 remaining in the first half. By that point, Villanova had already built a 7-0 lead. Creighton’s shooting struggles were profound in the opening period; the team shot just 27 percent from the floor in the first half and committed eight turnovers, which Villanova converted into 10 points. This early defensive stand allowed the Wildcats to build a 41-27 halftime cushion, a deficit from which Creighton could never fully recover.
Villanova’s control was anchored by a dominant performance from sophomore center Duke Brennan. The 6-foot-10 Chandler, Arizona, native scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his second double-double in three games. He was efficient and forceful in the paint, where Villanova outscored Creighton 48-34. Brennan’s interior presence was complemented by freshman guard Tyler Perkins, who also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Despite the large deficit, Creighton showed resilience after halftime, spearheaded by guard Nik Graves. The Durham, North Carolina, product scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and dished out five assists. A 15-4 Bluejays run, capped by a Graves-assisted Hudson Greer three-pointer with 1:52 to play, cut the Villanova lead to 60-58 and sent the home crowd of 16,479 into a frenzy. The surge was fueled by increased defensive pressure, which generated 11 fast-break points for Creighton compared to just four for Villanova.
However, the Wildcats responded with the poise of a conference contender. After a timeout, Villanova executed its offense and drew fouls, making 10 consecutive free throws in the final 1:17 to seal the game. Guard Devin Askew contributed 13 points, and forward Malachi Palmer added 10 off the bench, including a crucial three-pointer and two late free throws during the closing stretch.
For Creighton, Josh Dix led the team with 14 points, while Jasen Green pulled down 11 rebounds. Austin Swartz added 12 points off the bench. Their second-half effort, where they shot 50 percent from the floor and scored 42 points, was not enough to overcome the disastrous start.
The victory extended Villanova’s winning streak to four games and marked a significant rebound from their 76-72 home loss to Creighton on Jan. 7. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Villanova entered with a 51.9 percent probability to win and covered the pregame spread of 3.5 points. The total score of 149 went under the over/under line of 144.5.
Villanova next travels to face Xavier on Tuesday. Creighton will look to regroup on the road at Connecticut on Wednesday.
