East Carolina Outlasts Rice in American Athletic Conference Road Win
HOUSTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive efficiency and a crucial second-half surge, the East Carolina Pirates secured a significant road victory, defeating the Rice Owls 85-75 in an American Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The victory avenged a six-point home loss to Rice just over two weeks prior and snapped a two-game skid for the Pirates in the series. East Carolina improved to 9-16 overall, while Rice fell to 11-15.
The most important part of the game unfolded early in the second half. Leading by just four points at halftime, 38-34, the Pirates opened the final period with a decisive 15-6 run over the first six minutes. This burst, fueled by precise shooting and stifling defense, extended their lead to 53-40 and established a cushion that Rice would challenge but never overcome. The Owls, who struggled with their shooting throughout the afternoon, could not mount a sustained comeback against an East Carolina team that executed at a high level offensively.
The Pirates won the game with remarkable scoring efficiency. They shot 53.7 percent from the field, connecting on 29 of 54 attempts, and were an effective 8 of 17 from three-point range. They also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 19 of 26. This translated to an offensive rating of 126.2 points per 100 possessions, a mark that proved insurmountable for the Owls.
Rice, conversely, was plagued by poor shooting, particularly from beyond the arc. The Owls made just 9 of 34 three-point attempts, a 26.5 percent clip, and shot 38.2 percent overall from the field. Despite winning the offensive rebounding battle 16-7 and committing only nine turnovers, their inability to convert opportunities into points was the game’s defining statistical story. Rice’s offensive rating of 109.3 was solid but paled in comparison to East Carolina’s explosive output.
Jordan Riley, the standout guard for East Carolina, led all scorers with 22 points, adding six rebounds, four assists and two blocks in 40 minutes of action. He was complemented by a strong supporting cast. Demitri Gardner scored 21 points, while Giovanni Emejuru controlled the interior with 17 points and seven rebounds. Corey Caulker added 14 points for the Pirates.
Rice was led by a valiant effort from Trae Broadnax, who scored 27 points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Bodey Howell provided a spark off the bench with 19 points, including five three-pointers. Andrew Akuchie contributed eight points and eight rebounds for the Owls.
The game was a departure from pregame expectations. National statistical models gave Rice a 68.4 percent probability to win, and the Owls were installed as 4.5-point favorites. The total score of 160 points also sailed over the posted over/under line of 145.5.
A crowd of 1,789 at Tudor Fieldhouse saw the Pirates take control after halftime and maintain their composure down the stretch. East Carolina’s ability to answer every Rice push in the second half, coupled with their superior shooting performance, proved to be the difference in a game that swung decisively in the opening minutes of the final period.
East Carolina looks to build on the win when they host Wichita State on Wednesday. Rice will aim to regroup on the road at Tulane next Sunday.
