Eastern Washington Edges Montana State in Narrow Big Sky Road Victory
BOZEMAN, Mont. (Interstat) — In a game defined by grit and a singular, dominant performance, the Eastern Washington Eagles clawed their way to a narrow 72-71 victory over the Montana State Bobcats in a Big Sky Conference thriller Saturday night at a packed Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
The contest, played before 3,272 fans, was a stark reversal of fortune from just a month prior, when Montana State secured a four-point win in Cheney. This time, Eastern Washington, despite a challenging season, found a way to close, snapping a two-game skid and improving to 7-17 overall. Montana State, which had won three of its last four, fell to 14-11.
The story of the night was written in the paint by Eastern Washington’s Alton Hamilton. The 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward from Fontana, California, delivered a powerhouse performance, scoring a game-high 15 points and relentlessly attacking the glass. His work on the offensive boards, part of a 10-rebound team effort in that category, provided the Eagles with critical second-chance opportunities and helped offset Montana State’s efficiency in other areas.
Hamilton’s effort was the cornerstone of an Eastern Washington attack that, while not always crisp, was effective enough. The Eagles shot 48.3% from the field and a sharp 50% from 3-point range, making 7 of 14. They also took care of the ball poorly, committing 11 turnovers, but made up for it by converting their free throws, going 9 for 11 from the line.
Montana State, conversely, struggled with its shooting touch. The Bobcats hit just 24 of 58 from the field (41.4%) and 9 of 25 from beyond the arc. They attempted nine more free throws than Eastern Washington but made only 14, a 70% clip that proved costly in a one-point game. The Bobcats’ defense was active, recording eight steals and forcing those 11 turnovers while only giving the ball away five times themselves, but they could not consistently string together stops when needed.
Jeremiah Davis led Montana State with 14 points, while Christian King also added 14. Patrick McMahon facilitated the offense with a game-high six assists. For Eastern Washington, support for Hamilton came from Tyler Powell with 11 points and Isaiah Moses, who also scored 11.
The game unfolded as a tense, back-and-forth affair. Eastern Washington held a slim 37-34 lead at halftime, but Montana State chipped away in the second half. The Bobcats’ defense and sporadic scoring runs kept the home crowd engaged, setting the stage for a frantic final minute.
The most crucial sequence of the game began with just 27 seconds remaining. Trailing by four, Montana State’s Seth Amunrud drained a clutch 3-pointer off an assist from Patrick McMahon, slicing the deficit to a single point at 71-70. Following a Montana State timeout, Eastern Washington inbounded the ball against intense pressure. The Eagles executed under duress, finding Jojo Anderson for a driving layup with 18 seconds left to push the lead back to three at 72-70.
Montana State called another timeout to advance the ball. Out of the stoppage, the Bobcats again went to Amunrud, who connected on another 3-pointer, this time tying the game at 72-71 with just 14 seconds on the clock. The Eagles, now with the chance to hold for a final shot, did not call a timeout. They worked the ball to Anderson again, who drove the lane and scored a tough layup with only 1.8 seconds remaining, putting Eastern Washington back ahead 73-72.
Montana State had one final, desperate chance. Their full-court inbounds pass found its way to Jeremiah Davis, whose driving layup attempt in heavy traffic missed as time expired. A tip-in attempt by Chris Hodges also failed to drop, sealing the dramatic road victory for the Eagles.
The win was a significant one for Eastern Washington, marking its second victory in three games after a difficult stretch. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Montana State had entered the game with an 85.8% probability to win. The Eagles defied those odds with toughness and a timely play in the final seconds.
Eastern Washington next hosts Idaho State on Thursday. Montana State looks to rebound in its fierce rivalry game, traveling to face Montana on Saturday.
