Idaho at Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. (Interstat) — Two teams jockeying for position in the Big Sky Conference standings will meet Saturday when the Montana Grizzlies host the Idaho Vandals at Dahlberg Arena.

Both teams enter the 7 p.m. tipoff with identical 13-win overall records, though Idaho holds a slight edge at 13-10 while Montana is 13-11. The matchup carries added weight as the second meeting of the season; Montana secured a 79-73 victory in Moscow on Jan. 8.

The Vandals look to snap a two-game skid after falling 73-66 at Montana State on Thursday. Their fortunes often follow the play of guard Kolton Mitchell, who scored 21 points in that loss. Mitchell has been a consistent offensive catalyst, averaging 17.1 points over his last seven games, including a 23-point performance in Idaho’s 92-89 win over Montana State last month.

Montana is also seeking to rebound after a 82-74 home loss to Eastern Washington on Thursday. The Grizzlies are led by dynamic guard Money Williams, who poured in 25 points in that defeat. Williams has been on a scoring tear, averaging 22.4 points over his last five contests. His 24-point outing fueled Montana’s 64-60 win at Portland State on Jan. 29.

The game features a contrast in recent trajectories. Idaho has lost three of its last four, while Montana had won three straight before Thursday’s setback. Both squads have shown vulnerability at home and prowess on the road within conference play, setting the stage for a pivotal clash.

The venue may provide an edge for the Grizzlies, who are 8-3 at Dahlberg Arena this season. Idaho, however, has proven capable on the road with key conference wins at Northern Arizona and Weber State in January.

With the Big Sky tournament seeding at stake, Saturday’s contest offers both teams a chance to solidify their standing and gain momentum for the final stretch of the regular season. The backcourt duel between Idaho’s Mitchell and Montana’s Williams will be central to the outcome.
