Niagara at Quinnipiac

Preview: Niagara Looks to Build on Rare Win Against Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. (Interstat) — The Quinnipiac Bobcats, riding a strong Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season, will host the struggling Niagara Purple Eagles in a men’s Division I basketball matchup Saturday at TD Bank Sports Center.

The game pits teams at opposite ends of the conference standings. Quinnipiac (16-9 overall) enters with momentum after a 75-60 home victory over Canisius on Thursday. The Bobcats have won three of their last four, showcasing a potent offense led by guard Jaden Zimmerman. Zimmerman is averaging 16.2 points over his last five games, including a 24-point performance in a high-scoring loss to Sacred Heart on Jan. 30.

Niagara (6-17) snapped a five-game skid with a 65-56 home win over Canisius on Tuesday. The Purple Eagles will look to build on that rare positive result, but face a steep challenge on the road, where they are 2-9 this season.

A key matchup will feature both teams’ top performers. For Niagara, forward Josiah Sabino has been a bright spot, coming off a 13-point, two-assist, two-block effort in the win over Canisius. He posted a double-double with 13 rebounds against Sacred Heart on Jan. 24. His consistency will be vital for the Purple Eagles to keep pace.

Quinnipiac counters with Zimmerman, who has scored in double figures in nine consecutive games. His playmaking was on full display with seven assists in a Jan. 22 win at Mount Saint Mary’s, complementing his scoring ability.

The Bobcats won the first meeting this season, 83-75 at Niagara on Jan. 4. Since then, Quinnipiac has solidified its position as a contender in the MAAC, while Niagara has fought through a season of narrow defeats, with five of its conference losses coming by six points or fewer.

Saturday’s contest is the first of a regular-season series split, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 27 at Niagara. Tipoff in Hamden is set for 2 p.m. EST.
