San Francisco at Saint Mary`s
MORAGA, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging Saint Mary’s squad looks to continue its dominance in the West Coast Conference when it hosts a San Francisco team seeking a season-defining road win on Saturday at McKeon Pavilion.
The Gaels (20-4, 7-2 WCC) enter the matchup riding high after an 87-60 dismantling of San Diego on Wednesday. They have won eight of their last nine games, with their only loss in that stretch a narrow 73-65 defeat at Gonzaga. Saint Mary’s boasts one of the conference’s most balanced attacks, with Dillan Shaw coming off a 14-point performance against San Diego. The Gaels’ defense has been a hallmark, holding opponents to an average of just 62.8 points per game in WCC play.
San Francisco (14-11, 5-5) arrives in Moraga needing a signature victory to bolster its conference standing. The Dons are coming off a frustrating 84-75 home loss to Loyola Marymount, a game in which standout guard Ryan Beasley erupted for 30 points. Beasley has been the engine for the Dons, averaging nearly 15 points and over five assists per game in conference play. His playmaking will be critical against Saint Mary’s stout defense.
The Gaels won the first meeting this season handily, an 82-68 victory in San Francisco on Jan. 13. In that game, Saint Mary’s controlled the tempo and limited the Dons’ second-chance opportunities. Reversing that result will require San Francisco to find consistent scoring beyond Beasley and improve its defensive rebounding against a physical Saint Mary’s frontcourt.
For Saint Mary’s, a win solidifies its position near the top of the WCC standings alongside Gonzaga. For San Francisco, an upset on the road would provide a crucial Quadrant 1 victory and reignite its postseason aspirations. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST at a sold-out McKeon Pavilion.
