Villanova at Georgetown

Preview: Villanova Wildcats at Georgetown Hoyas

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — A surging Villanova looks to continue its push atop the Big East standings when it visits a resurgent Georgetown team at Capital One Arena on Saturday.

The Wildcats (17-5, 7-3 Big East) have won three straight and seven of their last nine, most recently a 72-60 victory over Seton Hall on Wednesday. They currently sit in a tie for second place in the conference.

The Hoyas (13-10, 5-5), meanwhile, have found momentum under first-year coach Ed Cooley, winning four of their last five games. That streak includes an impressive 76-68 win over then-Creighton last time out, signaling their potential to disrupt the league hierarchy.

This matchup is a quick rematch of a Jan. 21 meeting in Philadelphia, which Villanova controlled for a 66-51 win. Georgetown will be eager to avenge that loss and protect its home court.

A key battle will feature two of the conference’s hottest guards. Villanova’s Tyler Perkins has been a model of consistency, scoring in double figures in 12 straight games. The sophomore is averaging 17.1 points over his last seven contests, including an 18-point effort against Seton Hall.

Georgetown will counter with junior KJ Lewis, who is coming off a career-high 22 points in the win over Creighton. Lewis has averaged 18.4 points over his last five games, providing a critical scoring punch for the Hoyas. He was held to 12 points in the first meeting with Villanova.

Villanova’s success has been built on defense, ranking among the national leaders in efficiency. They held Georgetown to 30.9% shooting in the January win. The Wildcats’ balanced attack also features Acaden Lewis and Malachi Palmer, who combined for 26 points against Seton Hall.

Georgetown’s recent surge has been fueled by improved offensive flow and the emergence of freshman Malik Mack (20 points vs. Creighton) alongside Lewis. Protecting the ball against Villanova’s pressure will be paramount; the Hoyas committed 15 turnovers in the first matchup.

A Georgetown victory would mark a significant resume-building win and move them to .500 in conference play. For Villanova, winning on the road is essential to keep pace in a tight Big East race.

Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. EST on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Capital One Arena. The game will be televised on FOX.
