Islanders Host Huskies in Southland Conference Rematch

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — Texas A&M-Corpus Christi looks to complete a regular-season sweep when it hosts Houston Christian in a Southland Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at American Bank Center.

The Islanders (11-10, 4-4 Southland) defeated the Huskies (8-13, 3-5) 81-65 in Houston on Jan. 5. In that game, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used a balanced attack to pull away, holding Houston Christian to 38.6% shooting.

Houston Christian enters having snapped a two-game skid with an 81-75 home victory over Incarnate Word on Tuesday. Guard Demari Williams led the Huskies with 24 points in that win, continuing a strong stretch where he has averaged 15.2 points over his last nine games. Williams was held to seven points in the first meeting with the Islanders.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a 64-55 home loss to Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Monday, which halted a two-game winning streak. Guard Nicholas Shogbonyo, who scored 20 points in a win at Incarnate Word on Jan. 24, is a key perimeter threat for the Islanders. He had four points in the earlier win over Houston Christian.

The Huskies have struggled on the road this season, going 1-9 in away games. Their lone road win came at Incarnate Word on Jan. 3. The Islanders are 7-3 at home.

In the Jan. 5 matchup, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi dominated the paint and capitalized on 15 Houston Christian turnovers. The Islanders’ defense will aim to contain Williams and Huskies’ guard Trent Johnson, who scored 20 points in the win over Incarnate Word.

Saturday’s contest is the first of two games in three days for both teams. Houston Christian visits Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Monday, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hosts Incarnate Word.

The game tips off at 4:30 p.m. CST.
