Duke at Virginia Tech

Preview: Duke Visits Virginia Tech in ACC Showdown

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — The surging, second-ranked Duke Blue Devils, boasting the nation’s premier record, face a tough road test against the Virginia Tech Hokies at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday in a key Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball matchup.

Duke (19-1, 8-0 ACC) arrives as one of college basketball’s most dominant forces, riding a nine-game winning streak since its only loss to Texas Tech on Dec. 20. The Blue Devils have won their eight conference games by an average of 18.5 points, including an 83-52 rout of Louisville on Monday.

Virginia Tech (16-6, 5-4) looks to protect its home court and secure a season-defining victory. The Hokies have been inconsistent in league play but are coming off a 71-65 home win over Georgia Tech on Tuesday. They are 10-2 at Cassell Coliseum this season.

A focal point will be the backcourt battle between Duke’s emerging standout Patrick Ngongba and Virginia Tech’s high-scoring guard Ben Hammond. Ngongba, a sophomore, is averaging 13.1 points over his last seven games, including a 15-point effort against Louisville. Hammond, a junior, has been the Hokies’ engine, scoring 20 or more points in three of his last five outings and averaging 18.1 points in ACC play.

Duke’s attack is multifaceted, with five-star freshman Cameron Boozer (19 points vs. Louisville) and sharpshooter Nikolas Khamenia providing consistent support. The Blue Devils have scored 80 or more points in 14 games this season.

Virginia Tech will counter with Hammond’s backcourt mate Jailen Bedford (14 points, 4 assists vs. Georgia Tech) and forward Christian Gurdak. The Hokies will need to control the tempo and limit turnovers against a Duke defense forcing over 14 per game in conference play.

History adds intrigue, as Cassell Coliseum has been a challenging venue for top-ranked teams. Duke leads the all-time series 52-14, but the Hokies have secured memorable upsets at home in recent years.

A win would solidify Duke’s hold on the ACC regular-season race. For Virginia Tech, a victory would represent a crucial Quadrant 1 resume boost for NCAA Tournament consideration.

Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. EST on Saturday, Jan. 31.
