UNC Asheville at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — A tightly contested Big South Conference race brings a quick rematch to Winthrop Coliseum on Saturday as the Winthrop Eagles host the UNC Asheville Bulldogs.

Just two weeks after Winthrop (15-8) escaped Asheville with a 69-67 victory on Jan. 17, the Eagles will look to complete the regular-season sweep and solidify their conference standing. The Bulldogs (10-12), meanwhile, seek revenge and a crucial road win to climb back toward .500.

The Jan. 17 matchup was a defensive battle, decided by a single possession. Winthrop’s Logan Duncomb was pivotal in that win, scoring 17 points. The 6-foot-10 forward enters this game in dominant form, coming off a career-high 38-point performance in an 82-72 win at Presbyterian on Jan. 24. Over his last seven games, Duncomb is averaging 22.1 points per contest, establishing himself as the focal point of the Eagles’ offense.

UNC Asheville counters with guard DJ Patrick, who was held scoreless in the first meeting but has since found a rhythm. Patrick is coming off a 16-point effort in a 69-50 rout of Gardner-Webb on Thursday. In the six games since facing Winthrop, he has averaged 12.5 points, including a 24-point outburst at Radford on Jan. 10.

The Eagles have been the hotter team, winning seven straight games since a non-conference loss to Texas Tech in late December. Their 15-8 record reflects a potent offense that has scored 80 or more points in five of those seven wins.

The Bulldogs have shown resilience, alternating wins and losses over their last six games. Their defense shined against Gardner-Webb, holding an opponent to 50 points for the first time this season. Replicating that defensive intensity will be key against a high-scoring Winthrop squad.

Saturday’s game tips off at 2 p.m. EST. Winthrop will look to protect its home court, where it is 8-2 this season, while UNC Asheville aims to improve a 3-7 road record and turn the tables from their narrow loss earlier this month.
