Saint Joseph’s Holds Off La Salle in City Rivalry

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a gritty, defense-dominated Big 5 contest where offensive rhythm was scarce, Saint Joseph’s leaned on a decisive first-half surge and a standout performance from Dasear Haskins to secure a 67-58 victory over La Salle on Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena.

The Atlantic 10 Conference matchup, played before a crowd of 2,755, was defined by cold shooting and physical play. The Hawks, however, found just enough offensive spark, primarily from beyond the arc, to build a cushion the Explorers could never overcome.

Saint Joseph’s set the tone early with a barrage of three-pointers. After La Salle’s Rob Dockery opened the scoring with a three, the Hawks responded with a 14-2 run fueled by long-range shooting. Jaiden Glover and Dasear Haskins connected from deep, and Derek Simpson added another triple, staking the visitors to a 17-7 lead less than six minutes into the game.

That early separation proved critical. La Salle struggled mightily with its shooting throughout the afternoon, finishing a dismal 3 for 19 from three-point range and just 3 for 8 from the free-throw line. The Explorers’ offensive rating of 85.5 on 68 possessions underscored their inefficiency.

Despite the poor shooting, La Salle stayed within striking distance due to relentless effort on the offensive glass, where they secured 11 rebounds, and by forcing 14 Saint Joseph’s turnovers. Dockery was a constant force inside for the Explorers, battling for putbacks and finishing through contact to keep the deficit manageable.

The Hawks took a 36-29 lead into halftime, and the second half followed a similar pattern of attrition. Every time La Salle threatened to cut the lead to a single possession, Saint Joseph’s answered. A driving layup by Ashton Walker brought La Salle within 41-36 with just over 14 minutes remaining, but Khaafiq Myers immediately responded with a three-pointer for the Hawks.

The Explorers made their final push in the closing minutes. A driving layup by Dockery and a three-pointer from Damon Strand, only La Salle’s third of the game, trimmed the Saint Joseph’s lead to 54-52 with 3:21 left. The tension in the historic arena spiked.

The most important sequence of the game followed. On the ensuing possession, Saint Joseph’s worked the ball to Derek Simpson, who drove and finished with a powerful dunk to push the lead back to four. After a La Salle miss, the Hawks ran clock before Simpson was fouled. He made one of two free throws for a 57-52 advantage.

La Salle’s next two possessions ended in a turnover and a missed three-pointer. Saint Joseph’s then delivered the dagger when Glover sank a corner three-pointer off an assist from Myers, extending the lead to 60-52 with just over two minutes to play, effectively sealing the outcome.

Dasear Haskins led Saint Joseph’s with 20 points and 11 rebounds, controlling the paint and stretching the floor by hitting four three-pointers. Jaiden Glover added 16 points, and Derek Simpson contributed 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds despite committing seven turnovers.

For La Salle, Rob Dockery was a one-man wrecking crew, finishing with a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds. Ashton Walker added nine points and six assists, but the Explorers received little consistent scoring support elsewhere.

Saint Joseph’s improved to 14-8 overall with the win, while La Salle fell to 7-15. The Hawks succeeded despite being out-assisted 9-4 and committing more turnovers. They won the game at the three-point line, making 14 of 32 attempts compared to La Salle’s 3-for-19 showing, a 33-point disparity from deep that ultimately decided the contest.

The Hawks will host Lasell on Tuesday before resuming A-10 play against George Washington on Wednesday. La Salle travels to face Loyola Chicago on Tuesday. The two city rivals are scheduled to meet again in the regular-season finale at Saint Joseph’s on March 7.
