South Dakota State at Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Two teams jockeying for position in the Summit League will meet Wednesday when the Omaha Mavericks host the South Dakota State Jackrabbits at Baxter Arena.
Both sides enter with identical 10-win overall records, with South Dakota State at 10-11 and Omaha at 10-12. The matchup is a quick rematch of a game played less than four weeks prior, a contest the visiting Jackrabbits controlled in an 84-69 victory on Jan. 1 in Brookings.
That result will likely be on the minds of the Mavericks as they seek to defend their home court and level the season series. Omaha arrives with momentum from a 77-60 road victory at Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday. Forward Paul Djobet powered that win with 23 points and four assists, continuing a strong stretch where he has scored 18 or more points in seven consecutive games.
South Dakota State looks to rebound from a 74-69 road loss at Saint Thomas (Minn.) last Thursday. In that game, guard Joe Sayler shouldered the offensive load with 24 points. Sayler has been a consistent catalyst for the Jackrabbits, averaging over 20 points per game in his last six outings, including a 27-point performance in an overtime loss at North Dakota on Jan. 3.
The game features a compelling duel between two of the conference’s top scorers in Sayler and Djobet. Containing them will be a primary focus for both defenses.
With the conference schedule nearing its midpoint, the contest carries weight for seeding in the upcoming Summit League tournament. Both teams have shown the ability to score in bursts but have struggled with consistency throughout the season.
After this game, Omaha will travel to face Denver on Saturday. South Dakota State’s next contest is at home against Oral Roberts on Jan. 31.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Wednesday at Baxter Arena.
