California at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — A surging California team riding its best start in years will face a struggling Florida State squad desperate for a conference win when the Golden Bears visit the Seminoles in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

California (15-5) enters with momentum from a 78-66 road victory over rival Stanford on Saturday. The win showcased the Golden Bears’ offensive firepower, led by standout guard John Camden. The junior is averaging 19.4 points over his last five games, including a 25-point performance against the Cardinal. He is complemented by backcourt mate Justin Pippen, who had 18 points and six assists against Stanford.

The Golden Bears’ strong record, however, masks recent road struggles within the ACC. They have lost three straight true road games, falling at Virginia Tech, Virginia and Louisville in December and early January. Coach Mark Fox’s team will look to reverse that trend against a Florida State defense that has allowed an average of 86.2 points in its last five games.

Florida State (8-12) is mired in a difficult season, having lost eight of its last ten. The Seminoles are coming off a heartbreaking 83-80 loss at SMU on Saturday, a game in which they squandered a late lead. Forward Lajae Jones has been a bright spot, posting a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds in that contest. He and guard Robert McCray, who leads the team in scoring, will need big performances to challenge California’s balanced attack.

The Seminoles’ defense, a traditional strength under coach Leonard Hamilton, has been uncharacteristically porous. They rank near the bottom of the ACC in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, a concerning trend against a California team shooting 48% from the field this season.

For Florida State, this game represents a critical opportunity to gain traction before a tough closing stretch. For California, it is a chance to solidify its NCAA tournament resume by securing a valuable conference road victory. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST.
