West Georgia at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Interstat) — A tightly contested ASUN Conference series resumes Wednesday night when the West Georgia Wolves visit the Bellarmine Knights at Knights Hall.

The matchup is a quick rematch of a Jan. 1 thriller in Carrollton, Georgia, where West Georgia (10-10, 4-3 ASUN) edged Bellarmine (7-13, 2-5) 87-85. The Wolves have since hovered at .500, coming off a 74-66 home win over Queens last Saturday. The Knights are looking to build momentum after a narrow 117-114 overtime road loss at North Florida on Saturday, a game that saw them post a season-high in points.

West Georgia’s fortunes often follow the explosive performances of guard Shelton Williams-Dryden. He scored 28 points in the first meeting against Bellarmine and is averaging 26.4 points over his last seven games, including a 31-point effort at Stetson and a 24-point, 11-rebound double-double against Queens. Containing him will be Bellarmine’s primary defensive challenge.

Bellarmine counters with guard Sam Donald, who had 8 points and 4 assists in the first matchup. He is coming off a season-high 22 points in the overtime shootout at North Florida. The Knights will need a more consistent defensive effort after allowing 117 points, despite the offensive outburst.

Both teams have struggled for consistency in January. West Georgia’s win over Queens snapped a three-game skid, while Bellarmine has lost five of its last six, with the lone win coming at Jacksonville on Jan. 22.

The game tips off at 7 p.m. EST in the 2,200-seat Knights Hall. For West Georgia, it’s a chance to solidify a winning conference record. For Bellarmine, it’s an opportunity for redemption on home hardwood and to climb out of the ASUN cellar.
