Owls Outlast Pirates in High-Scoring AAC Contest

GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering offensive display from one player and a collective defensive stand from the other, the Rice Owls weathered a historic individual performance to secure an 83-77 victory over the East Carolina Pirates in an American Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Williams Arena.

The contest was overshadowed by a spectacular 37-point effort from East Carolina guard Jordan Riley, but it was Rice’s balanced scoring and crucial second-half adjustments that ultimately decided the outcome before an announced crowd of 4,107.

The first half was a tightly contested affair that ended in a 33-33 deadlock, setting the stage for a dramatic final 20 minutes. The Owls emerged from the break with a clear offensive purpose, unleashing a 17-6 run over the first six minutes of the second period. The surge was fueled by precise outside shooting and decisive ball movement, turning a tie game into a 50-39 Rice advantage.

Nick Anderson, who finished with 19 points, ignited the run with a 3-pointer, and Jalen Smith, who led the Owls with 21 points, added another from deep. The sequence was capped by a Trae Broadnax driving layup that forced an East Carolina timeout and gave Rice its first significant breathing room.

While Rice built its lead, Riley was single-handedly keeping the Pirates afloat. The junior from Brentwood, New York, was relentless, scoring from all three levels. He finished the night shooting 14 of 25 from the field and added eight rebounds in 36 minutes. His driving layup with 2:28 remaining cut the Rice lead to 64-61, injecting late tension into the building.

Each time Riley brought the Pirates within striking distance, however, Rice had an answer. Following Riley’s layup, the Owls’ Cam Carroll, who contributed 14 points and five assists, calmly sank two free throws. After a Demitri Gardner 3-pointer made it 69-66 with just under two minutes to play, Broadnax responded with a clutch pull-up jumper to push the lead back to five.

The most critical sequence came in the final minute. With Rice leading 74-71 and 35 seconds left, East Carolina’s Giovanni Emejuru stole the ball, giving the Pirates a chance to tie. But on the ensuing possession, Riley was stripped by Rice’s Jalen Smith. The Owls’ Eternity Eguagie was fouled and made both free throws with 29 seconds left, extending the lead to 76-71 and effectively sealing the game.

Rice’s victory was a product of superior efficiency, particularly from beyond the arc. The Owls connected on 12 of 28 3-point attempts, a 42.9% clip, while East Carolina managed only 4 of 19 from deep. This 24-point disparity from long distance proved insurmountable for the Pirates, despite their significant advantage at the free-throw line, where they made 23 of 26 attempts.

Defensively, Rice managed to contain the rest of the East Carolina roster. Beyond Riley’s 37 and 16 points from Gardner, no other Pirate scored in double figures. Emejuru added 13 points but was hampered by Rice’s defensive attention inside. The Owls also won the possession battle, committing 12 turnovers to East Carolina’s nine and grabbing 11 offensive rebounds.

The win improved Rice’s record to 9-12 overall and provided a positive start to a key conference stretch. The loss dropped East Carolina to 6-15, a disappointing result on a night where their star delivered a career-best performance.

Rice will look to build momentum when it travels to face Charlotte on Saturday. East Carolina, seeking to rebound from the tough loss, hits the road for a matchup at Florida Atlantic on Sunday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Houston on Feb. 14.

According to pregame analytics from Interstat, East Carolina was projected with a 70.6% probability to win and was installed as a one-point favorite. The combined score of 160 points sailed over the posted over/under line of 141.5.
