Missouri State Rallies Past UTEP in Defensive Conference USA Battle

EL PASO, Texas (Interstat) — In a grinding, defensive struggle where points were a premium, Missouri State overcame a sluggish first half and a determined UTEP squad to secure a 62-57 road victory in a Conference USA men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Don Haskins Center.

The game, played before a crowd of 3,788, was a stark contrast to the teams’ meeting earlier this month, a 24-point Missouri State win. This contest was defined by physical defense, poor shooting, and a critical second-half surge by the visiting Bears.

Missouri State (12-8, 3-2 CUSA) labored offensively for the opening 20 minutes, managing just 21 points and trailing by 10 at the break. UTEP (7-13, 2-3), led by Jamal West’s all-around play and Elijah Jones’ outside shooting, built its lead to 31-21 by capitalizing on Bears’ turnovers and converting in transition.

The most important part of the game unfolded after halftime, as Missouri State flipped the script with a 20-6 run over the first nine minutes of the second half. The Bears’ defense tightened considerably, holding the Miners to a single field goal during that decisive stretch. Michael Osei-Bonsu, the Bears’ top star, anchored the comeback with his interior scoring and rebounding, while guard Kobi Williams provided the perimeter punch.

UTEP, which shot just 38 percent from the field for the game, went cold at the worst possible time. After Jones hit a 3-pointer with 17:28 remaining to give UTEP a 34-28 lead, the Miners went nearly seven minutes without a basket from the floor. Missouri State pounced, with Williams hitting a trio of 3-pointers and Osei-Bonsu converting inside to seize a 41-37 advantage.

The Miners fought back to tie the game at 46-46 with 8:52 left, but could never regain the lead. Missouri State responded with a 7-0 spurt, keyed by a Trey Williams Jr. 3-pointer and a Kobi Williams floater, to create enough separation to withstand UTEP’s final push.

In the closing minutes, with Missouri State clinging to a 58-57 lead, the Bears secured the win at the free-throw line. Kobi Williams sank two clutch free throws with two seconds remaining to provide the final margin after UTEP’s Kaseem Watson missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer on the previous possession.

Osei-Bonsu, a 6-foot-4, 280-pound force from Bolingbrook, Illinois, led Missouri State with 17 points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes, continuing a string of strong performances. Williams, a sophomore from St. Louis, scored a game-high 21 points, including 15 in the second-half rally. Keith Palek added eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists for the Bears.

UTEP was led by Jones, who scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, and West, who finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Kaseem Watson contributed 10 points off the bench.

Statistically, the game was a battle of attrition. Both teams had 66 possessions, but Missouri State’s offensive rating of 94.0 narrowly bested UTEP’s 86.2. The Bears won despite committing 15 turnovers and being outscored 16-12 off those miscues. They made up for it by dominating points in the paint, 28-20, and by shooting 74 percent from the free-throw line compared to UTEP’s 73 percent.

The victory gave Missouri State a regular-season sweep of the Miners and moved them above .500 in conference play. UTEP, which had been a slight pregame favorite according to advanced metrics, saw its two-game winning streak snapped.

Missouri State will look to build on the road win when it hosts Sam Houston on Wednesday. UTEP aims to regroup at home against Louisiana Tech on the same night.
