Northwestern at UCLA
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — A surging UCLA looks to solidify its standing in the Big Ten when it hosts a Northwestern team seeking consistency on Saturday at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins (13-6) enter the conference matchup riding the momentum of a signature win, having edged Purdue 69-67 on Tuesday behind a stellar performance from point guard Donovan Dent. The junior recorded 23 points and 13 assists, showcasing the playmaking that has fueled UCLA’s 13-6 start.
Northwestern (9-10) snapped a five-game skid with a 74-68 road victory at Southern California on Wednesday. The Wildcats’ success runs directly through forward Nick Martinelli, who has been on a remarkable scoring tear. The senior is averaging 26.1 points over his last seven games, including a 34-point outing in an overtime loss at Rutgers on Jan. 11. Containing him will be a primary focus for the Bruins’ defense.
UCLA holds a clear advantage in the standings and will rely on Dent’s dual-threat ability to orchestrate the offense. Beyond his recent triple-double threat against Purdue, Dent is averaging 8.4 assists in his last five contests. His backcourt matchup with Northwestern’s Jake West, who had 11 points and five assists against USC, will be pivotal.
The Wildcats have struggled defensively during conference play, allowing an average of 77.2 points in their last six Big Ten games. They will need to find answers for a balanced UCLA attack that features Dent, forward Tyler Bilodeau and guard Trent Perry.
Historically, UCLA leads the all-time series 7-2, though this will be the first meeting as Big Ten conference foes. The game tips off at 7 p.m. PST in Los Angeles.
For Northwestern, the contest begins a challenging stretch of four road games in their next six. UCLA continues a homestand before traveling to Oregon next Wednesday.
