Undefeated Nebraska Faces Minnesota in Big Ten Showdown
MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — The nation’s only remaining undefeated team in men’s Division I basketball puts its perfect record on the line Saturday when Nebraska visits Williams Arena to face Minnesota.
The Cornhuskers (19-0, 8-0 Big Ten), off to the best start in program history, have dominated conference play. Their average margin of victory in eight Big Ten games is 14.5 points. They are coming off a 76-66 home win over Washington on Wednesday, led by 23 points from Pryce Sandfort.
Sandfort, a sophomore guard, has been a scoring catalyst. He is averaging 18.6 points over his last seven games, including a 28-point performance against Oregon on Jan. 13. He will be a primary focus for a Golden Gophers defense seeking an iconic upset.
Minnesota (10-9, 3-5) has struggled recently, losing four of its last five games. However, the Gophers have been competitive, with three of those losses by six points or fewer, including an 82-74 overtime defeat at Ohio State on Tuesday. In that game, sophomore forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson scored a career-high 26 points.
Crocker-Johnson has elevated his play in conference action, averaging 18.0 points over Minnesota’s last six games. His matchup with Nebraska’s frontcourt will be critical if the home team is to spring a surprise.
The Golden Gophers will need a near-perfect performance to challenge a Nebraska team that ranks in the top 10 nationally in both offensive and defensive efficiency. The Cornhuskers have already secured road wins at Illinois, Indiana and Ohio State this season.
Historically, Williams Arena has been a tough venue for visitors, but Nebraska enters as a substantial favorite. A win would move the Cornhuskers to 20-0 and maintain their two-game lead in the loss column in the Big Ten standings.
Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST Saturday. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
For Nebraska, the journey continues next Tuesday at Michigan. Minnesota travels to face rival Wisconsin next Wednesday.
