Duke Routs Wake Forest in ACC Men’s Basketball Showdown
DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — Cameron Boozer scored 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Duke overwhelmed Wake Forest 90-69 in Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball on Saturday afternoon at a raucous Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils, improving to 18-1 overall and 8-0 in the ACC, used a dominant performance on the glass and relentless offensive efficiency to pull away from the Demon Deacons in the second half. Wake Forest fell to 11-9 and 3-6 in conference play.
The game’s most important sequence came late in the first half, turning a competitive contest into a comfortable Duke lead. With Wake Forest trailing 27-24 after a Juke Harris three-pointer, the Demon Deacons committed turnovers on three consecutive possessions. Duke star Cameron Boozer capitalized, sparking a 15-3 run to close the half. He converted a three-point play, assisted on a Nikolas Khamenia layup, and then fed Patrick Ngongba for two easy baskets. The surge gave the Blue Devils a 42-31 halftime advantage from which Wake Forest never recovered.
Duke’s control was cemented by a massive rebounding advantage, particularly on the offensive end where they secured 16 boards leading to 21 second-chance points. Wake Forest managed only four offensive rebounds. The Blue Devils also excelled at the free-throw line, making 21 of 24 attempts, while Wake Forest was an efficient 11 of 13.
Boozer, the sophomore forward from Miami, was the engine for Duke, adding four assists in 32 minutes. His performance continued a stellar stretch, following 30-point and 21-point outings in Duke’s previous two games. He was supported by a strong interior presence from Patrick Ngongba, who contributed 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Maliq Brown orchestrated the offense from the forward position with eight rebounds and five assists.
Wake Forest was led by Juke Harris, who scored 23 points, including five three-pointers. Cooper Schwieger added 12 points and Omaha Biliew had 11, but the Demon Deacons could not match Duke’s physicality or shot-making consistency. Wake Forest shot well from beyond the arc, making 14 of 32, but were outscored 46-24 in the paint and gave up 21 points off nine turnovers.
The Blue Devils opened the second half with a 9-2 spurt, extending their lead to 18 points and effectively sealing the outcome. Wake Forest never cut the deficit below 14 points the rest of the way as Duke’s offense operated with a 137.6 rating on 65 possessions, compared to Wake Forest’s 105.9.
The announced crowd of 9,314 watched Duke win its eighth consecutive game and maintain its perfect record at home. The Blue Devils, who were installed as 17.5-point favorites, outperformed the spread as the total score of 159 surpassed the over/under line of 149.5.
Wake Forest, which entered having lost four of its last five, faces a quick turnaround with a road game at Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Duke continues its ACC schedule at home against Louisville on Monday.
