Florida International at UTEP
Preview: Florida International at UTEP in Conference USA Men’s Basketball
EL PASO, Texas (Interstat) — The Florida International Golden Panthers visit the UTEP Miners on Thursday night in a Conference USA matchup at the Don Haskins Center, a rematch of a game from earlier this month.
Florida International (9-9) won the first meeting 76-64 at home on Jan. 4. The Golden Panthers have since lost four straight, however, including an 86-89 defeat at Kennesaw State and a 63-76 home loss to Sam Houston on Saturday. Guard Julian Mackey has been a bright spot, averaging 17.3 points over his last three games. He scored 23 points in 26 minutes against Sam Houston.
UTEP (6-12) looks to halt a two-game skid after a 69-80 loss at Liberty on Saturday. The Miners are 4-5 at home this season. Guard Caleb Blackwell is coming off a strong performance against Liberty, finishing with 20 points and seven assists. He also scored 15 points in a narrow 70-69 road win at Delaware on Jan. 15.
Both teams are seeking momentum in the conference standings. Florida International’s recent struggles have come despite offensive production from Mackey and Corey Stephenson, who had 14 points against Sam Houston. UTEP will rely on Blackwell and forward Elijah Jones, who posted 21 points and two blocks in the Liberty loss.
The Golden Panthers’ offense, which averages over 80 points per game during their losing streak, will test a UTEP defense that has allowed 75.8 points per game this season. UTEP’s ability to protect its home court and avenge its earlier loss could hinge on containing Mackey and improving its defensive consistency.
Tipoff is set for Thursday night in El Paso. Florida International visits New Mexico State on Saturday. UTEP hosts Missouri State on Saturday.
