Texas A&M-Commerce Stuns Incarnate Word in Southland Conference Road Victory

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — In a season defined by narrow losses and offensive struggles, the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions authored a commanding and efficient performance Monday night, routing the Incarnate Word Cardinals 80-58 in a Southland Conference men’s basketball game at the McDermott Convocation Center.

The Lions, who entered the game with just seven wins and ranked near the bottom of the conference in several offensive categories, dismantled the Cardinals with a season-best offensive rating of 135.4, scoring 80 points on just 59 possessions. The victory snapped a two-game skid for Texas A&M-Commerce and improved its record to 8-12 overall. Incarnate Word fell to 9-10.

The most important part of the game was the Lions’ immediate and sustained offensive execution, which built an insurmountable first-half lead and completely stifled any hope of a Cardinals comeback. From the opening tip, Texas A&M-Commerce played with a precision and cohesion that had been absent in recent outings. The tone was set on the game’s first meaningful possession, as Gianni Hunt, after two offensive rebounds by his teammates, drilled a 3-pointer just 48 seconds into the contest.

That play foreshadowed the entire half. While Incarnate Word clanked its way to a 4-for-21 performance from 3-point range for the game, the Lions were surgical in building their advantage. They shot 55.6% from the field in the game and assisted on key early baskets, with Hunt orchestrating the offense. A 9-0 run midway through the first half, capped by a Noah Pagotto 3-pointer and a Damian Garcia layup, stretched an early lead to 17-6. The Lions never allowed the Cardinals to mount a serious threat.

Incarnate Word, which had been projected as a heavy favorite with an 85.3% win probability by Interstat’s ELO system, could not match the visitors’ intensity or shot-making. The Cardinals shot a frigid 32.8% from the field overall. Every time UIW showed a flicker of momentum, such as when Love Bettis scored five quick points to pull within 17-13, Texas A&M-Commerce had an immediate answer, often from Pagotto in the paint or Garcia on the perimeter.

The Lions closed the first half emphatically. After Incarnate Word’s Harrison Reede hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 10 with 37 seconds left, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Tay Mosher responded with a 3-pointer of his own just before the buzzer, sending the Lions into halftime with a 38-29 lead and all the momentum.

The second half was a mere formality. Texas A&M-Commerce opened with a 9-2 burst, extending the lead to 47-31 within four minutes, and the margin ballooned to as many as 27 points. The Lions’ defense remained relentless, holding Incarnate Word to an identical 29 points in the second half. The Cardinals’ leading scorer, Tahj Staveskie, finished with 17 points but needed 17 shots to get there, emblematic of his team’s frustrating night.

Hunt led the Lions with 15 points and seven assists, controlling the game’s tempo. Pagotto, the 6-foot-8 forward from Wollongong, Australia, was a force inside with 16 points, while Garcia added 17 points. Ronnie Harrison provided 12 points and three assists, and Mosher chipped in 11. For Incarnate Word, Bettis scored 13 points and Harold Woods added seven points and three assists.

The decisive victory provides a significant boost for Texas A&M-Commerce as it heads into a road test at Northwestern State on Saturday. Incarnate Word looks to regroup at home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, also on Saturday.

The game was attended by 163 spectators.
