George Mason Edges George Washington in Tight Atlantic 10 Contest
FAIRFAX, Va. (Interstat) — In a tense Atlantic 10 Conference clash defined by defense and a decisive final minute, the George Mason Patriots edged the George Washington Revolutionaries 69-64 on Monday night at EagleBank Arena.
A crowd of 6,434 watched the Patriots, now 18-1 overall, protect their home court and formidable record by overcoming a sluggish offensive start and holding off a persistent Revolutionaries squad in the closing moments. George Washington fell to 12-7.
The most critical sequence unfolded in the final 20 seconds with George Mason clinging to a 65-64 lead. After a George Washington timeout, the Revolutionaries inbounded the ball to their standout forward Rafael Castro, who powered through contact for a dunk to pull his team within one point with 19 seconds remaining. The Patriots immediately inbounded and pushed the ball upcourt, where guard Kory Mincy drove for a layup, assisted by Stas Sivka, to extend the lead back to three at 67-64 with just nine seconds on the clock.
George Washington’s last chance to tie came up short as Tre Dinkins’ rushed three-point attempt from the wing missed, and Patriots guard Fatt Hill secured the defensive rebound with two seconds left to effectively seal the outcome. Hill was fouled and made both free throws for the final margin.
The game’s pivotal stretch was a microcosm of the entire contest: George Washington’s Castro making a tough interior play to keep hope alive, followed immediately by George Mason executing under pressure to answer and secure the win.
The Revolutionaries had opened the game on a 9-0 run, capitalizing on early Patriots turnovers and misses. Garrett Johnson scored seven points during that initial burst. George Mason settled in behind the interior presence of Riley Allenspach and the backcourt play of Masai Troutman and Kory Mincy, eventually taking a 38-30 lead into halftime.
George Washington chipped away throughout the second half, never allowing the Patriots to build a comfortable advantage. Castro and Johnson provided consistent scoring, while Christian Jones orchestrated the offense with six assists. Each time the Revolutionaries drew close, however, George Mason found a response, often from Allenspach in the post or a timely three-pointer.
Allenspach led all scorers with 18 points and added nine rebounds for George Mason. Mincy finished with 13 points and four assists, while Troutman contributed 14 points and three assists. Hill provided a crucial spark off the bench with 11 points, three assists, and several key defensive plays.
For George Washington, Johnson led the way with 18 points. Castro was a force inside, recording 17 points, two blocks, and multiple key rebounds before fouling out in the final minute. Trey Autry added 12 points for the Revolutionaries.
The Patriots, who entered as a 2.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, outperformed the pregame statistical projection which gave them an 88.5% chance of victory. The combined point total of 133 fell well under the betting over/under line of 155.5, underscoring the defensive struggle.
George Mason looks to continue its strong season on Saturday when it travels to face Rhode Island. George Washington returns home to host Richmond this Saturday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch at George Washington on Friday, Feb. 13.
