VCU Holds Off Saint Joseph’s in Tight Atlantic 10 Contest
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and a relentless pursuit of the basketball, VCU used its signature havoc to overcome a spectacular scoring performance from Saint Joseph’s guard Derek Simpson and secure a 79-72 Atlantic 10 Conference victory on Monday afternoon at a raucous Siegel Center.
The Rams, improving to 13-6 overall, forced 18 Saint Joseph’s turnovers, converting them into 12 points, while committing only 10 of their own. That disparity in ball security proved decisive in a contest where the visiting Hawks (11-8) shot a higher percentage from the field and from three-point range but simply could not find enough clean possessions down the stretch.
Saint Joseph’s, led by Simpson’s game-high 27 points, started brightly. The guard from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, hit two early three-pointers as the Hawks built a small lead. VCU responded with its defensive intensity, generating steals and easy transition opportunities. The Rams took a 34-29 lead into halftime, fueled by balanced scoring and a clear edge in the turnover battle.
The second half evolved into a compelling duel between Simpson and VCU’s multifaceted attack. Simpson was brilliant, scoring 20 of his points after the break, including a deep three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining that cut the VCU lead to 75-72 and momentarily silenced the crowd of 7,637. He finished 10 of 19 from the field and added four assists.
Every time Simpson brought the Hawks close, however, VCU had an answer. The most important sequence came in the final minute. After Simpson’s three made it a one-possession game, the Rams’ Terrence Hill was fouled and calmly sank two free throws with nine seconds left to push the lead back to five. On the ensuing inbounds play, VCU’s pressure forced a Saint Joseph’s turnover, and Hill was fouled again, icing the game with two more makes from the line.
While Simpson starred for the Hawks, VCU won with a collective effort. Michael Belle, a 6-foot-8 sophomore from London, England, was the Rams’ top performer with 20 points, five rebounds and two blocks, providing critical interior scoring and defense. Brandon Jennings, a hometown product from Richmond, added 18 points, including several key baskets in the second half. Hill orchestrated the offense with eight assists and scored 13 points, all while helping spearhead the defensive effort.
The Hawks’ Justice Ajogbor was a force defensively in the paint, recording six blocks to go with 10 points and nine rebounds. His presence altered countless VCU attempts, but the Rams’ persistence on the glass, where they secured nine offensive rebounds, helped mitigate his impact.
Saint Joseph’s shot 47.3% from the field and 44.4% from three-point range, compared to VCU’s 42.9% and 36.7%, respectively. Yet, the Hawks’ 18 turnovers and VCU’s 12 steals underscored the game’s defining characteristic. The Rams’ offensive rating of 107.5 points per 100 possessions, against the Hawks’ 94.7, highlighted the efficiency gap created by VCU’s extra chances.
The victory keeps VCU in the upper tier of the Atlantic 10 standings, while Saint Joseph’s sees a two-game winning streak snapped. The Hawks will look to regroup at home against Dayton on Saturday. VCU hits the road for a conference matchup at Davidson, also on Saturday.
