Montana at Montana State

BOZEMAN, Mont. (Interstat) — The 316th meeting of the ’Brawl of the Wild’ men’s basketball rivalry arrives with both teams at a crossroads, as the Montana Grizzlies visit the Montana State Bobcats in a critical Big Sky Conference matchup Saturday at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

The rivals enter with identical 9-8 overall records, each looking to establish momentum in the heart of the league schedule. The game tips off at 7 p.m. MST.

Montana (9-8, 3-1 Big Sky) saw a three-game winning streak snapped last Saturday in heartbreaking fashion, falling 66-65 at Eastern Washington. The Grizzlies will lean heavily on sophomore guard Money Williams, who has been on a scoring tear. Over his last four conference games, Williams is averaging 23.8 points and 4.8 assists, including a 35-point outburst in a win at Idaho on Jan. 8.

Montana State (9-8, 3-1) also suffered a narrow road loss last time out, falling 92-89 at Idaho. The Bobcats counter with their own high-scoring guard in senior Jed Miller. He has topped 20 points in three of his last four contests, averaging 18.8 points per game during that stretch to fuel the team’s offense.

The matchup features two of the conference’s top backcourt talents in Williams and Miller, setting the stage for a pivotal individual duel. Montana’s recent success has been fueled by its offense, averaging 77.5 points in its four Big Sky games. Montana State has shown resilience, with its only conference loss coming by three points on the road.

History adds weight to the contest. The series, which dates to 1902, is the most-played rivalry in NCAA Division I basketball. The teams split last season’s meetings, each winning on their home floor. The atmosphere at a sold-out Brick Breeden Fieldhouse is expected to be electric for the first of two regular-season clashes, with the rematch set for Feb. 14 in Missoula.

A win would give either team a valuable early-season edge in the Big Sky standings and bragging rights in one of the nation’s most enduring rivalries.
