Utah Valley Rides Strong First Half to Defeat Texas-Arlington in WAC Play

VINEYARD, Utah (Interstat) — In a Western Athletic Conference clash defined by offensive efficiency and a decisive early surge, the Utah Valley Wolverines used a dominant first half to secure an 86-74 victory over the Texas-Arlington Mavericks before a crowd of 2,517 at the UCCU Center on Saturday.

The Wolverines, improving to 15-4 overall, seized control with a blistering offensive display in the opening period, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor to build an 18-point halftime lead. The Mavericks, who fell to 12-6, mounted a persistent second-half challenge but could never close the gap to single digits against a balanced and methodical Utah Valley attack.

The game’s most pivotal stretch arrived early, as Utah Valley weathered initial sloppiness from both sides to unleash a 20-4 run over a seven-minute span in the first half. After Texas-Arlington’s Marcus Rigsby was assessed a flagrant foul at the 17:36 mark, Utah Valley’ Trevan Leonhardt converted both free throws to ignite the sequence. Leonhardt then scored on a layup off a Tyler Hendricks assist, and Jackson Holcombe added a layup on the next possession to push the lead to 12-4.

The Mavericks struggled with turnovers and missed shots during the run, while the Wolverines capitalized with interior scoring and transition opportunities. A hook shot from Hayden Welling and a dunk from Hendricks extended the margin, and a Braden Housley three-pointer capped the surge, giving Utah Valley a 23-8 advantage with just over 14 minutes remaining in the half. Texas-Arlington never fully recovered from that early deficit.

Utah Valley’s offensive execution was the story, finishing the game with an offensive rating of 124.1 points per 100 possessions. The Wolverines shot 32 for 60 from the field for 53.3 percent and outscored the Mavericks 42-30 in the paint. They also won the rebounding battle 38-31, including 14 offensive boards that led to 15 second-chance points.

Leonhardt, a guard from Kaysville, Utah, orchestrated the victory with a team-high 14 points and six assists in 37 minutes. Holcombe, a forward from Charleston, South Carolina, provided a significant all-around contribution with 16 points, five assists and two blocks. The Wolverines’ depth was on full display as Isaac Davis (14 points), Hayden Welling (14 points) and Tyler Hendricks (12 points) all reached double figures.

Texas-Arlington was led by the dynamic scoring of guard Casmir Chavis, who poured in a game-high 20 points to go with three assists. Forward Marcell McCreary added 15 points, but the Mavericks’ offense often sputtered, posting an offensive rating of 105.2. They shot just 42.9 percent overall and 30 percent from three-point range. While they forced 14 Utah Valley turnovers and committed only 10 themselves, they were unable to offset the Wolverines’ superior shooting efficiency.

The Mavericks showed fight after halftime, scoring 46 second-half points. A Chavis layup with 14:51 remaining cut the deficit to 55-49, representing the closest they would come. Utah Valley responded immediately with a 6-0 spurt, keyed by a Holcombe layup and a tip-in from Leonhardt, to push the lead back to 12 and effectively snuff out the rally.

Utah Valley’s defense, which entered the game allowing just 66.2 points per contest, held firm down the stretch. The Wolverines recorded seven steals and four blocks, with Holcombe and reserve big man Isaac Hawkins each swatting two shots. The Mavericks’ final attempt to threaten was extinguished when, trailing 80-74 with under three minutes left, consecutive turnovers by Raysean Seamster and Chavis led to fast-break baskets for Leonhardt and Welling, extending the lead to 10 with 3:27 to play and sealing the outcome.

The victory solidified Utah Valley’s position near the top of the WAC standings, while Texas-Arlington saw a two-game winning streak snapped. According to pregame analytics from Interstat, Utah Valley was projected with an 84.7 percent probability to win and covered the spread as 9.5-point favorites. The total score of 160 points sailed over the over/under line of 142.

Both teams continue conference play next week. Utah Valley travels to face Southern Utah on Wednesday, while Texas-Arlington returns home to host Tarleton State. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch in Orem on February 7.
