Kennesaw State at Western Kentucky
HADLEY, Ky. (Interstat) — A pair of teams riding hot streaks and sporting identical records will clash Saturday when Kennesaw State visits Western Kentucky in a Conference USA men’s basketball matchup.
The Owls (11-6) and Hilltoppers (11-6) each enter the 7 p.m. EST tipoff at E.A. Diddle Arena having won three of their last four games. Both squads are coming off impressive home victories last Wednesday, with Kennesaw State edging Florida International 89-86 and Western Kentucky handling Missouri State 87-72.
The game features a compelling backcourt matchup between two of the league’s top scorers. Kennesaw State is led by guard RJ Johnson, who is averaging 21.3 points over his last three contests. He poured in 26 points and dished seven assists in the win over FIU. For Western Kentucky, guard Teagan Moore has been a consistent force, scoring 19 or more points in four of his last six outings, including a 20-point performance against Missouri State.
Kennesaw State’s recent success has been fueled by a high-powered offense. In their current three-game win streak, the Owls have averaged 89 points per game. Alongside Johnson, guards Trey Simpson (28 points vs. FIU) and Simeon Cottle (21 points vs. FIU) provide additional scoring punch.
Western Kentucky has found its rhythm by balancing offensive efficiency with defensive pressure. The Hilltoppers have held opponents to an average of 64.3 points during their three wins in January. Moore’s versatility is key, but they also receive steady contributions from guards LJ Hackman and Terrion Murdix, who combined for 20 points and nine assists in the last game.
Both teams have navigated similar paths this season, with strong non-conference showings and early conference splits. This contest will serve as a critical early barometer in the Conference USA standings.
The Hilltoppers will look to protect their home court, where they are 8-2 this season. The Owls, however, have proven capable on the road, including a notable overtime win at Florida Gulf Coast in November.
Following this game, Kennesaw State will travel to face Sam Houston on Jan. 21, while Western Kentucky will host Liberty the same night. The two teams will meet again in a rematch at Kennesaw State on Jan. 28.
