Kentucky at Tennessee

Preview: Kentucky Wildcats at Tennessee Volunteers

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A pivotal Southeastern Conference men’s basketball showdown is set for Saturday when the Kentucky Wildcats visit the Tennessee Volunteers at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Both teams enter coming off dramatic, narrow conference victories earlier this week. Kentucky (11-6, 2-2 SEC) edged LSU 75-74 on the road Wednesday behind 21 points from guard Otega Oweh. Tennessee (12-4, 2-1) needed double-overtime to outlast Texas A&M 87-82 at home Tuesday, fueled by a 23-point effort from forward Nate Ament.

The matchup features two of the league’s hottest performers. Oweh, Kentucky’s dynamic guard, has scored 20 or more points in five of his last six games, averaging 21.2 points during that stretch. His playmaking has also been critical for a Wildcats squad seeking consistency after a nonconference slate that included lopsided losses to Gonzaga and North Carolina.

For the Volunteers, the 6-foot-9 Ament provides a versatile scoring threat. He logged 43 minutes in the marathon win over Texas A&M and is coming off a 17-point performance in a road loss at Florida last Saturday. Tennessee’s defense, typically a hallmark under coach Rick Barnes, will be tested by Kentucky’s perimeter attack.

The Wildcats have won two straight but are just 2-3 in true road games this season. Tennessee is 8-1 at home, with the lone loss coming against then-Illinois in December.

This contest begins a tough stretch for both teams. Kentucky hosts Texas next Wednesday, while Tennessee travels to face Alabama on Jan. 24. The rivals will meet again in Lexington on Feb. 7.

Saturday’s game tips off at 8:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. The Volunteers won both meetings last season.
