Presbyterian Dominates Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference Mismatch
SHELBY, N.C. (Interstat) — The Presbyterian Blue Hose delivered a commanding wire-to-wire victory, dismantling the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs 92-55 in a Big South Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Paul Porter Arena.
From the opening tip, Presbyterian established a dominance that never wavered. Triston Wilson of Miami, Florida, sank a 3-pointer just 23 seconds into the contest, setting a tone of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure that Gardner-Webb could not counter. The Blue Hose built a 19-point lead by halftime, leading 40-21, and only expanded it in the second half, outscoring the Runnin’ Bulldogs 52-34 after the break.
The most important part of the game was the opening 15 minutes, where Presbyterian constructed an insurmountable lead by exploiting Gardner-Webb’s offensive ineptitude and converting turnovers into easy scores. The Blue Hose opened the game on a 15-1 run, holding Gardner-Webb without a field goal for nearly the first six and a half minutes. During that decisive early stretch, Gardner-Webb committed five turnovers and missed eight of its first nine shot attempts. Presbyterian, meanwhile, operated with precision, scoring 56 points in the paint for the game and converting 15 Gardner-Webb turnovers into 21 points. The Runnin’ Bulldogs finished the first half shooting just 7 of 24 from the floor and 2 of 10 from 3-point range, crippled by an offensive rating of 80.3 for the game.
Presbyterian’s offensive attack was balanced and potent, led by a standout performance from Jonah Pierce. The 6-foot-10 forward from Sanford, Florida, scored 20 points on efficient 9-of-11 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. Triston Wilson orchestrated the offense, finishing with 19 points and a game-high six assists. Khalon Hudson of Augusta, Georgia, added 17 points, and Jaylen Peterson of Stone Mountain, Georgia, contributed 18 points off the bench. The Blue Hose shot 58.3% from the field overall.
Gardner-Webb, which fell to 2-18 overall, struggled to find any consistent offense. Colin Hawkins of Colorado Springs, Colorado, led the team with nine points and four assists. Spence Sims of Fairhope, Alabama, scored 10 points. The Runnin’ Bulldogs shot 36.7% from the field and were outrebounded 38-24.
The victory improved Presbyterian to 10-10 overall and marked its second consecutive win following a nail-biting victory over UNC Asheville earlier in the week. The 37-point margin of victory was Presbyterian’s largest in conference play this season and its most lopsided road win in the series history with Gardner-Webb.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 458, was never in doubt after the initial surge. Presbyterian’s defensive pressure, which generated eight steals, and its overwhelming advantage in assists, 8-4, underscored a complete performance that the struggling Runnin’ Bulldogs had no answer for on either end of the floor.
Presbyterian next hosts Charleston Southern on Wednesday. Gardner-Webb travels to face Longwood on the same night.
